Obituary

Afton Gardner Miller Barnes Parkinson, 90 of Rexburg, died Monday, December 5, 2011 at The Homestead Assisted Living Center, in Rexburg, Idaho.

She was born Feb. 26, 1921 in Lyman, Idaho the first child of Burton LeRoy Gardner and Reigh McIntier. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 husbands, a brother, Kent Gardner, a son, Stephen Ray Miller, and a grandson, Brian M. Miller.

She is survived by her 2 sons, Allan (Nita) Miller of Rexburg, Idaho, and John R. Barnes of Los Angeles, California, 2 sisters, Berniece Walker of Rigby, and Joyce Andrews of Fresno, California and one brother, Richard Gardner of Idaho Falls, Idaho, 3 granddaughters: Cheree (Myron) Walz, Valerie (Will) Eckersell, Niko (Jim) Miller., 12 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions. She was a member of the Rexburg 15th Ward, Rexburg East Idaho Stake and resided at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Rexburg, Idaho where she received wonderful care and made many friends.

She married Delbert DeLoy Miller on Sept. 12, 1940 in Arco, Idaho. They had 4 children, 2 sons, and 2 daughters. The daughters were born dead and one son, Stephen, died 4 days after birth of the RH factor. Her other son, Allan DeLoy Miller, lives in Rexburg, Idaho.

Afton worked at Madison Memorial Hospital for 18 years as a nurse (LPN) where she retired after a devastating stroke in 1976.

She married Albert Cleverly Barnes on Aug. 7, 1960 in Hibbard, Idaho and they were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on May 6, 1966. They had one son, John Roy Barnes who lives in Los Angeles, California. She later married Keith Parkinson in 1992.

Afton lived in Fresno, California with her sister, Joyce Andrews for 12 years until moving back to Rexburg.

A viewing will be held Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and a graveside services will be held for the family at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.flamm.com.
