Mary Alice Smith Hegsted passed away peacefully at her home on February 7, 2021.

Alice was born on August 4, 1923, in Rexburg, Idaho, to LeGrand Carlos Smith and Mary Maria Gibbons Smith. She was welcomed to the family by two older brothers, Carl and Herman.

Her early childhood was spent on the family farm at Sugar City and the dry farm east of Newdale. Growing up during the Great Depression and war years taught her the value of hard work and frugality.

She attended elementary school in Rexburg and later in Sugar City, graduating from Sugar-Salem High School in 1941. Alice enjoyed playing the violin, and attending dances at Riverside, during her high school years. She attended Utah State University majoring in education and formed many friendships during her school years that have lasted throughout her life.

Alice married Harold M. Hegsted, her high school sweetheart, on July 21, 1945, in the Logan LDS temple. Alice devoted herself to her family and those around her. Alice was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed serving in several different organizations. She also served as a temple worker for many years in the Idaho Falls Temple.

She also enjoyed working outside in her yard and loved mowing the lawn. She was a seamstress and made clothes for her daughters. Family was her total focus.

Alice is survived by her daughters, Karen Wright, of Rexburg, Idaho; Marlene Grimmett of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Kolleen (Tony) Morgan of Rigby, Idaho; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hegsted; her parents, LeGrand and Mary Smith; brothers, Carol (Gayle) Smith and Herman Smith.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Flamm Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 11, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Flamm Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
