Obituary

Venna Ardell Campbell Smellie, 88, a lifetime resident of Tetonia, Idaho, died of natural causes Wednesday, August 31, in Idaho Falls at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Jerelyn and Fred Roth.

Ardell was born January 1, 1923, in Tetonia, Idaho, to Bryant Campbell and Almedia Fullmer Campbell. She married Robert Kirkham Smellie on May 29, 1941, in Idaho Falls. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

She was a lifelong Republican and an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and her husband served full-time temple missions in Atlanta, Georgia, and Santiago, Chile. She and her husband also served in the Idaho Falls Temple for 18 years. She has held numerous callings in the Church, including Primary president, stake and ward Young Women's president, and stake Relief Society president. Her favorite calling was teaching Sunday School for the 16- to 18-year-olds, where she influenced countless young men to serve missions.

Ardell loved to sew and quilt, and she donated several hundred quilts and baby quilts to the LDS Humanitarian Services.

Survivors include her children, Judy (Charlie) Cook of Tetonia, Annette Mendoza of Idaho Falls, Kenneth (Jane) Smaellie of Apache Junction, Arizona, Dale (Denice) Smellie of Bountiful, Utah, Jerelyn (Fred) Roth of Idaho Falls, and Mitchell (Juli) Smaellie of Tetonia. She is survived by 24 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters (Lorraine Phelps and Luenna Orr) and one brother (Wendell Campbell).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, by two brothers and six sisters, by a grandson (Russell Smaellie), and by a great grandson (Austin Chapman).

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 5, in the Tetonia LDS Chapel, with Bishop Ronald Berry officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and for one hour before services Monday both times at the Tetonia LDS Church. Burial will be in the Cache-Clawson Cemetery under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home of Rexburg.
