IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barry
Smith
February 18, 1938 – June 8, 2025
Barry was born on February 18, 1938, in Mesa, Arizona. Barry was the youngest of six children born to Lula Palmer and Henry Smith. He physically towered over his siblings, but more importantly, stood tall in the sight of the Lord. Barry was sealed to his eternal companion, Marilyn Keyes, on March 29, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple. Barry was predeceased by his wife Marilyn and daughter Holly. He is survived by his sons, Troy K. Smith, Darren B. Smith, and Adam R. Smith, twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
A precocious, energetic lad, Barry grew up in Temple City, California, where he participated in various activities. These included fast-pitch softball, basketball, scouting, and music, each of which he continued to enjoy well into his adulthood.
In addition to athletics, Barry first began to learn to serve others as a boy scout, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Being musically inclined, Barry sang as a strong baritone for many years, performed in local musicals, and even conducted a ward choir. As a young man, Barry served the Lord in the Andes mission, primarily in Argentina and Chile, where he built a strong working knowledge of the Spanish language. After returning from his mission, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Keyes, in the Salt Lake temple. Marilyn was his rock and partner in every sense of the word.
During his marriage, Barry and his beloved Marilyn welcomed four children into their family: Troy, Holly, Darren, and Adam. While he was often a stoic man of few words, he deeply loved his family, and demonstrated integrity, a tireless work ethic, and righteous church service in both word and deed.
Barry was an instrument in the hand of the Lord until his body would no longer permit it. Though he fulfilled callings in various wards and stakes, perhaps the most defining chapter of Barry's church life was during the 1990s, when Marilyn and he served in the Sacramento Tenth ward for the better part of that decade. Barry lovingly gave all of his time and talents to those wonderful saints. Many individuals recounted for years afterward that he would always be mi obispo, or my bishop.
In the autumn of life, when retirees often spend their time on vacation, Barry and Marilyn began to care for Holly, and assisted in raising her two children, Sarah and Ryan. Over time, as both Marilyn and Holly's health declined, Barry continued to stand tall, often caring for them without respite or accepting relief. Remarkably, he was able to continue this service into his early 80s.
Barry was never famous, wealthy, or powerful according to the measurements of the world. He was more than that: a loving husband, a caring father, a faithful servant, a man of God.
Though Barry's absence creates a moment of sorrow, the Savior provides everlasting joy. Our earthly father, grandfather, and great-grandfather endured to the end. He fought a good fight. He finished his course. He kept the faith.
