Clarence Golden “Bernie” Jensen, age 91, passed away peacefully at Home stead Senior Living Center on Friday, June 5.
Bernie was born on June 30, 1934, in Huntsville, Utah, to Peter Christian and Nelchene Wallace Jensen, the youngest of seven children. A gifted athlete, he was a high school track star who set Utah state records. He turned down a track scholarship to Brigham Young University in order to remain in Huntsville and help his aging father with the family beekeeping business.
Bernie later served a mission in Denmark for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning home, he attended Brigham Young University, where he met Carol Wood. They were married on August 20, 1958—a day Bernie often described as the best day of his life. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in History and a Ph.D. in Education. Bernie taught at Ricks College/BYU–Idaho for many years and was known for opening his home to students, especially during the Christmas season. Together, Bernie and Carol led numerous tour groups to Israel, and Jerusalem became a cherished second home to them.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bernie found great joy in serving others. He especially treasured his service in the Rexburg Idaho Temple and his opportunities to serve within the community.
Bernie is survived by his five sons: James (Lisa) Jensen of Elk Grove, California; Michael (Heidi) Jensen of Sugar City, Idaho; Robert (Tricia) Jensen of Meridian, Idaho; Christopher (Tammy) Jensen of Saratoga Springs, Utah; and Matthew (Kristen) Jensen of Cottonwood Heights, Utah. He was the proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Each one was deeply loved and knew that Grandpa loved them “most.” He is also survived by his sister, Emma June (Bill) Stewart of Manhattan Beach, California.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol; his daughter-in-law, Cynthia Jensen; his parents; and his siblings: Pauline (Lester) Hartsock, Robert (Athaleen) Jensen, Marilyn (Curtis) Watkins, Wallace (Maxine) Jensen, and Rulon (Helen) Jensen.
A viewing will be held at Flamm Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 9, at 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., and again at the Rexburg 4th Ward Building (166 S. 1st E.) on Wednesday, June 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 noon
