Obituary

Betty L. Stephens Bell, 80 of Teton, died at home on Saturday, July 15, 2017.

She was born on March 15, 1937 in Barnesville, Belmont, Ohio, the fifth child of James Francis and Lucy Leora Carpenter Stephens. Betty attended schools in Cambridge and Barnesville, Ohio and graduated from Barnesville Hing in 1955. She had some college courses along the way and several in-service courses.

Betty always worked around her Red Cross "Learn to Swim" program for over 35 years, as the swimmers and instructors came first. She dearly delighted in teaching the Fred E Grog drown-proofing program that she developed while living in Florida. While working for Special Services in Oakland, CA, assisting the returning veterans, she developed a water exercise program that is still being used today.

On May 29, 1957, Betty married Gene Richard Bell in Liberty, Indiana. They later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Chicago, IL and were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 6, 1963. The first 23 years of marriage was spent in the Navy and many transfers across the country afforded them opportunities to serve in several Church callings and in the Scout program. Betty has served as Relief Society president coast to coast and in Primary and Young Women's. Each calling was her favorite! They served a mission to McAllen Texas in 2001-2002. Family History, Extraction, and Indexing records has kept her busy and out of trouble since 1978. Officiating in the Idaho Falls Temple and the Rexburg Temple was indeed an honor. Betty never met a piece of thread that couldn't be made into a crocheted article. She'll miss the many good times at the Book Club.

She is survived by her eternal companion, Gene, sons Gene (Brenda) of Bellingham,WA; David (Allison) of Bountiful, UT, Oscar (Jackie) of Roy, UT and favorite daughter & son-in-law, Mary (Jeff) Carter of Sugar City, ID. She has been blessed with 23 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Teton LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 noon until 12:45 p.m. at the Church. Interment will be in the Teton-Newdale Cemetery under the direction of Bert Flamm Mortuary. Betty's wish is that you donate to your favorite charity or Primary Children's Hospital.
