Betty Hymas, 91, of Plano passed away on Nov. 27, 2016 surrounded by family while under the care of hospice and the Homestead staff. Betty was born May 22, 1925 in Stavely, Alberta, Canada to G. David Brown & Blanche Smith Brown.
She, her 4 sisters and 1 brother grew up and spent their early childhood in Canada attending a one-room school house. Travel was usually by horse or wagon. Betty was taught by her parents the value of hard work and thriftiness. At age 12, she and the family moved to her lifelong home in Plano to begin a new life on another farm. She thrived in the rural community surrounded by cousins and neighbors and eventually met her future companion, Bert Hymas. After graduation from Edmunds High in a class of 3 girls and 7 boys, she and Bert were married and sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple in 1944. They immediately caught a bus and traveled back home to begin their own farm and dairy.
To this union were born 3 children; Darlene, Dennis & Bernice. They all worked together milking cows, planting crops and constructing every building on the place with hand-mixed cement and blocks. Betty managed to can, plant gardens, and keep an immaculate house inbetween the dairying and farming.
One of the highlights of their life together was through an LDS church calling as Stake Dance Directors in 1968. They taught youth and teachers in preparation for festivals and activities for many years. The social dancing eventually evolved into square dancing and round dancing which they carried down to St. George in 1995 where they made some very choice friends for the winter months. Betty also enjoyed quilting, family history and many church callings. She was the devoted wife of Bert for 72 years, an enthusiastic grandmother, a loving sister, and a kind neighbor.
She is survived by her husband, Bert, her daughter Darlene (Steve) Wood, son Dennis (Susan) Hymas, 11 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren and a sister, Margaret Rigby.
She was preceded in death by her precious daughter, Bernice and 3 sisters and 1 brother.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Plano LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and again from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be at the Plano Cemetery.
