Robert Lorin "Bob" Kauer, age 67, of Rexburg, Idaho and Nome, Alaska, died October 13, 2013, in Rexburg.
He was born September 21, 1946, in Rexburg. He was the first child of Lorin B. and Erma Siepert Kauer. He was followed by four brothers and two sisters.
In 1949, the family moved to Leadore, Idaho. It was a child's paradise with plenty of space to explore. He loved the time he spent there. In 1955, they moved to a farm near Rexburg where he learned the value of hard work. He was a great help to his Dad.
He attended schools in Leadore and Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School in 1964. He studied Business Administration for two years at Ricks College and drove truck in his spare time. He served a mission from 1966 to 1968 in the Southern States Mission.
In 1970, he and his friend Quinn Saurey joined the Army National Guard. They trained at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He received a trophy for super performance by scoring the maximum points in Basic Combat Training.
In 1972, he joined the Rexburg Police Department. He worked there for six years and was promoted to Lieutenant.
Bob made his first trip to Alaska, up the Alcan Highway, with his Boy Scout troop at the age of 15. In April 1978, Bob went with two uncles and drove the Alcan Highway again. The call of Alaska was strong for this Idaho boy.
Bob made his decision to move to Nome, Alaska, resigning his position from the Rexburg Police Department. He was hired by the Nome Police Department in May 1978 and stayed until June 1979. He tried the construction business building houses in Savoonga until January 1980. He went back to Nome and started with the police again. He was promoted from patrolman to Chief. He held this position until his retirement in January 1998. After his retirement he started a hunting guide service, "Jades Arctic Grizzlies". He guided hunters from all over the world.
Bob and Caroline "Cussy" Christine Reader were married the day of his retirement, to everyone's surprise. They had five children, Kelly, RaJene, Krysta, Jade and Dawson. They were a joy to Bob. He loved spending time with them. He and Cussy later divorced. Bob still spent the summers in Alaska with his kids and came home to Idaho for the winters. In April 2013, he returned to Alaska, but became ill and returned home in September.
He is survived by his mother, Erma Kauer and his children, Kelly Thrun, RaJene Reardon, Jade, Dawson and Krysta Kauer; four brothers, Dan (Brenda) Kauer, Dennis (Loretta) Kauer, Gary Kauer, Doug (Holly) Kauer and two sisters, Marilyn (Quinn) Saurey and Debbie Parkinson.
