Boyd "F" Holdaway, great-grandpa, grandpa, dad, and friend, passed away after being visited by friends and family on March 17, 2024. He was born at the Crane Maternity home on the 29th of April, 1938 in Provo, Utah. His parents are Clyde Amos Holdaway and Delphia Fransen Holdaway. Boyd grew up on a dairy farm in Vineyard, Utah. His schooling started as he graduated from Lincoln High School in Orem, Utah in 1956. He then received a Bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1963 and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Riverside in 1971.
Boyd married his childhood sweetheart, Lois Jensen, on July 21, 1960 in the Manti Temple, only eight days after returning from his mission. In September of that same year Boyd left his wife of two months to serve six months of basic training in the Utah National Guard. Six years later he was honorably discharged from the Army Reserve while living in Hawaii.
Boyd and Lois are the parents of five children. His wife (of 39 years) passed away in August of 1999 and in July of 2000 he married Kathryn Mortensen, Lois's best friend, in the Timpanogos Temple in American Fork, Utah.
Boyd is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served a two-year mission in the Great Lakes Mission from 1958-1960. Later, in 2004-2005, he and his wife Kathryn served an 18-month mission to the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2012-2013 they served for 18 months in the Addiction-Recovery Mission for LDS Family Services. Boyd served in various capacities in the Church, including twice as a Branch President, once at Ricks College and the second in Trinidad while in the West Indies. His other callings included 10 years as a scoutmaster, temple ordinance worker, high councilor, stake young men's president, and a counselor in the Cresthaven bishopric.
In 2001 he retired from Ricks College after teaching for 30 years in the Biology Department. For 24 summers he participated in an outdoor program sponsored by the college called the Salmon River Discovery, where he made lifelong friends who were by his side during his final days.
For one year he volunteered with Free Med of Idaho, an organization that assisted low income people finance their medicine.
Boyd had many hobbies, which included being with his family, spending time in his garden, listening to kids and grandkids and spending time in the mountains collecting rocks and wild flowers. Boyd also loved watching BYU football and basketball, Jeopardy, and cowboy western movies. Those who knew Boyd had a friend for life.
He is survived by his sons, Gary Boyd Holdaway, Boise, Idaho, Matthew Clyde Holdaway, Berkeley, California; Michael James Holdaway (Tara) Rexburg, Idaho; daughters JoAnn Eddins (Paul) of Rexburg, and Susan Nusink (Clair) Springville, Utah; Six step-children, Mary Lou Turley (Michael) West Jordan, Utah, Jimmy Mangan, Millcreek, Utah, JoLee Henriod (Chris) Riverton, Utah, Katrina Witt (Jonathon) Rigby, Idaho, Marty Mangan, Lorenzo, Idaho, Janeese Summers (John) Rexburg, Idaho. In all, Boyd has thirty-five grandchildren (including 24 step grandchildren) and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Colleen Strong (Wayne) of Mesa, Arizona and brother W. Richard Holdaway (Yvonne) of Salem, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lois, his wife Kathryn; step sons Keith and Steve Mangan; his brother Bruce Clyde Holdaway; and grandsons Connor Turley and Cameron Eddins.
There will be a viewing held on March 21, 2024 Thursday evening from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Cresthaven Ward church building in Rexburg. Funeral services will be held on March 22, 2024 Friday at 9:30 am at the Cresthaven Ward Building, a viewing will be held prior to the funeral at 8:00 am. Interment will be held at the Provo City Cemetery at approximately 3:00 pm Friday March 22, 2024.
