Obituary

Boyd Withers passed away peacefully in his sleep during the early hours of December 31, 2024, with his beloved wife of 61 years, LaRae Kunz, by his side. He was 85 years old.

Born February 19, 1939, in Rexburg, Idaho, Boyd was the third of five children of David Withers and Adalena Madsen. He spent his early years in Salem, Rigby and Jackson before returning to Rexburg for the remainder of his youth.  From a young age, Boyd worked alongside his family at the Withers IGA Foodliner; he often reflected fondly on those cherished times. David and Adalena inspired Boyd to value hard work and education.

During high school, Boyd joined the Army Reserve and trained in California. He then served a two-year mission in Australia. Upon returning home, he attended Ricks College where he met his soulmate, LaRae, who grew up in Victor, Idaho. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 9, 1963. That same year, Boyd graduated from Ricks College and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in finance from BYU in 1965. While attending BYU in Provo, Utah, Boyd and LaRae welcomed their first child, Trevar. The family then moved to Michigan where Boyd worked for Ford Motor Company. He earned an MBA at Wayne State University in 1973 by attending night school while working full-time and raising a growing family.

While living in Michigan, Boyd and LaRae had four more children: Candice, Kerri, Brett and Zachary. In his later years, Boyd reflected that he was happiest when all five of his children were still at home. In addition to being a loving father and providing significant church service, Boyd had an illustrious career. He and LaRae courageously embarked upon new adventures in Michigan, Texas, Wyoming, Missouri, Virginia, Connecticut and ultimately, back to Rexburg, where they have lived for the past 28 years. After a career of working for large corporations, one of his proudest accomplishments was creating Liberty Estates, where he was widely known for treating residents with kindness and dignity and keeping immaculate care of the grounds.

He had a quick wit and was celebrated for writing humorous poems. Through the years, Boyd and LaRae forged life-long friendships everywhere they lived. The outpouring of love and memories shared by family and friends since Boyd's passing has been overwhelming and is a testament of the lasting impact of his kindness, humor and faith.

Boyd is survived by his wife, five children, Trevar (Kathryn) Withers, Candice (Kevin) Fine, Kerri (Rich) Nielsen, Brett (Jeanette) Withers, Zachary Withers, nineteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sister Marilyn Bagley, and brothers Bart (Carol) Withers and Morris (Suzanne) Withers. He was preceded in death by his brother, LaVar (Marlene) Withers and his brother-in-law, Cloy Bagley.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 9, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home, 61 North 1st East, Rexburg, 83440.
