Obituary

Burton Raymond Shelton of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2016, due to Parkinson's disease.

Burt was born to Ross and Mary Shelton in Shelley, Idaho, on November 25, 1937. He was the oldest of nine children: Terri, Sandra, Boyd, Don, Kay Lynn, Jim, Rick, and Meladee.

Burt fulfilled a mission for the LDS church in the Kansas City, Missouri Mission from 1958-1960. Afterward, he attended Rick's College and Brigham Young University. He earned both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's Degree in Art Education.

On January 25, 1968, Burt married Nina Petersen of Orem, Utah, in the Salt Lake City temple. They had six children: Jason, Katrine, Ray, Daniel, Ben, and Paul, and lived in Ogden, Utah; Orem, Utah; Kayenta, Arizona; and Pleasant Grove, Utah. Burt had 18 grandchildren.

Burt was an art teacher for several years in Ogden, Utah and Kayenta, Arizona. However, he dedicated the majority of his working years employed at the Utah State Training School in American Fork, Utah, as a resident caregiver and as a vocational workshop supervisor. He held a deep compassion for people with disabilities. Later, he and his wife, Nina owned and operated The Starving Artist flower shop in Pleasant Grove, and then he worked as a classroom assistant in classrooms with disabled children. His final place of employment was at Rick's college in Rexburg, Idaho.

Burt was active in the LDS church for most of his life and served in many capacities, with stake mission president being the one he enjoyed the most.

After the death of his first wife, he remarried twice for brief amounts of time.

As an artist, Burt loved sketching animals, especially horses. He also developed great skill as an oil painter. Landscapes, old farms and barns, mountains, and horses were among his favorite subjects. Every year, he enjoyed tending a large vegetable garden. He raised goats, chickens, rabbits, ducks, and pheasants. He also loved taking long walks.

Burt was a gentle man and greeted everyone with a friendly smile and a kind hello.
