IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Clair
Yost
January 6, 1948 – December 30, 2025
Clair Elton Yost was born on January 6, 1948, in Driggs, Idaho, and passed away on December 30, 2025, at the Homestead Memory Care Facility in St. Anthony, Idaho.
Clair lived a life grounded in family and had a deep love for the outdoors. A true outdoorsman who found joy and freedom in telemark skiing deep in the backcountry and at Grand Targhee. He guided whitewater rafting trips for Rocky Mountain River Tours, mountain biked anywhere he could, and worked as an outfitter and entrepreneur. Industrious and self-reliant, Clair was a successful self-employed businessman whose work ethic shaped every chapter of his life. Clair's work at his carpeting company funded adventures and the building of his beautiful home in Tetonia. He opened YÖSTMARK Mountain Equipment in 1993 in Driggs, Idaho. He was a pioneer in the telemark skiing industry, designing his own soft fat powder skis, the Mountain Noodle.
Throughout his life, Clair called many places home, including Richmond and Provo, Utah; Thatcher, Arizona; Wellesley, Massachusetts; Seattle, Washington; Pocatello, Rexburg, Bancroft and Tetonia, Idaho; Alta, Wyoming; and Los Barriles, Mexico. Each reflected his adventurous spirit and love for both people and the land.
A world traveler with a curious soul, Clair embraced adventure wherever it led. He flew and hitchhiked around the world. He held a special love for Grand Targhee Ski Resort, any bluegrass music festival, The Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Mexico, and time spent in the mountains. Above all, he cherished his family and friends. Known for his warmth and easy manner, Clair truly never met a stranger and made new friends wherever he went.
Clair was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He became active later in his life and loved serving in the Rexburg Idaho Temple for many years.
Clair is survived by his beloved wife, Janelle Mattson Yost and her children, Elijah (Darcie) Mattson, Sophie (Taylor) Gordon and Milo C Mattson, and his brothers and their spouses, Orden (Georgia) Yost and Al (Stacey) Yost. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thad and Dean Yost; his stepmother, Marion Yost; and his younger brother, Eric Yost.
