Darrell Andrew Henderson, 77, of Rexburg, passed away peacefully, December 11, 2011, at Madison Memorial Hospital after a long battle following an accident in 2008. He was born October 16, 1934 in Salt Lake City to Glen and Ruth Henderson. He graduated from Madison High School, Ricks College and College of Southern Utah. He also attended graduate school at University of Utah and Brigham Young University. While attending Ricks College he met his sweetheart Joan Peterson. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple, July 17, 1959 and raised eight children. He served several missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after high school he served in the Western Canadian Mission. He also served two Stake Missions and with his wife in the Richmond, Virginia Mission.
Darrell taught school at Peruvian Park Elementary in Sandy, Utah for ten years before moving to Rexburg, ID to take over the responsibilities of the family owned business, Parts Service and Henderson Automotive Warehouse. After working in the auto parts business for many years he returned to his true passion of teaching. He taught 6th grade at Madison Middle School. After retiring he volunteered for many years in the community and at Hillview Elementary in Ammon, ID. He was awarded the Idaho School Boards Association- Citizenship Award for above- and- beyond contribution and dedicated service to Idaho's youth. He was also awarded Cross Country Coach of the Year in the years '83-84 and '84-85 while coaching the Madison High School team.
He served in many positions in the church including Bishop, High Councilor, and Temple Worker at the Idaho Falls Temple and Rexburg Temple. He loved the scouting program and helped many to receive their Eagle award including all five of his sons. His passions were scouting, track, teaching and most of all spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Joan of Rexburg, two sisters, Carol Smith of Rexburg and Joan Diamond of Rigby, his children Carrie (Rodger) Ford of Idaho Falls; Paul Henderson of Rigby; Colette (Paul) Otto of Pocatello; Gerald (Kris) Henderson of Hawaii; Richard (Cheri) Henderson of Vernal, Utah; Daron (Cheri) Henderson of Idaho Falls; Mark Henderson of Sandy, Utah; and Jane (Robert) Eddins of Bozeman ,MT. He is beloved by 25 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father Glen, and mother Ruth; two nephews Trent and Kirk Smith and a niece, Teresa Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17 at the Rexburg Center Stake LDS Chapel with Bishop Kevin Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center. Burial will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
