David LeRoy McGary, 92, of Rexburg, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Ashton Living Center surrounded by his family.
He was born June 16, 1921 in Shelly Idaho to David McGary and Esther Louise Staples McGary. He grew up in a large family in Shelly Idaho where he attended school until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Jan. 2, 1942. LeRoy was proud to serve his country in World War II and gave four years of service and was honorable discharged. While in the military he learned his life trade, and became a mechanic. He served four campaigns in the South Pacific with the 2nd Marines in the Engineers.
Upon returning home, he and his first wife, Dorothy Mae Gardner McGary were among the first group of people to be married in the newly opened Idaho Falls Temple and had five children. They divorced after 35 years of marriage. He would later meet Relda Nef Huskinson at a singles dance in Idaho Falls. They were married on November 1, 1980 in Idaho Falls. The couple then moved to Rexburg where he worked as a mechanic for Erickson Pontiac for about three years before retiring at age 63. He would then become well loved as a crossing guard at Adams Elementary School for another eight years.
LeRoy enjoyed the outdoors by spending time with his family camping, fishing, and boating. LeRoy also enjoyed working around the house as a Hobbyist, primarily wood working. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held numerous church callings.
When asked about the most important thing he ever did, LeRoy responded, "To raise a family."
Between LeRoy and Relda, they now have 9 children, 24, grandchildren, and 48 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Relda McGary and his children; Dennis (Carolyn) McGary of Beaverton, OR, Larry (Clarice) McGary of Hemet, CA, Robert (Mary) McGary of Irvine, CA, Betty (Vince) Harrison of Ucon, step-children; Linda (Bob) Marshall of Belgrade, MT, Elaine (Sid) Summers, Alan (Judy) Huskinson, Kirk E. (Kari) Huskinson all of Rexburg, his siblings; Don McGary of Basin City, WA, Dwain (Margaret) McGary of Fallbrook, CA, Jennie McGary of Shelley, Gerald (Doris) McGary of Idaho Falls, Alvin (Wanda) McGary of Leominster, MA and their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Carol (Dalynn) McClaskey, two brothers, 5 sisters, 2 granddaughters and a grandson.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013 at the Rexburg LDS North Stake Center (314 East 2nd North) with Bishop Richard Cluff officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Friday at the stake center from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Burton Cemetery with military rites by the Madison County Veterans and the Idaho Honor Guard.
