Dean Smith Arnold, 93, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, April 24, 2015, surrounded by his wife and family at his home in Sugar City. Dean was born October 16, 1921 in Rexburg, Idaho to Elbert and Eva Arnold. He was the fifth of seven children.
Dean attended school in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School in 1939 and Ricks College in 1954. He received his Master's degree in Agricultural Economics from Utah State University in 1958. Dean was an outstanding athlete and in 1984 was inducted into the Ricks College Athletic Hall of Fame for football, basketball and track.
Dean served in World War II, the Korean War, the Berlin Crisis and was on the Vietnam Draft Board. After serving 23 years in the military Dean retired as a Lt. Colonel.
Dean married Verla Mae Hendricks on November 17, 1944 and their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 23, 1946. Dean had two sons, Val Dean and Mike Alan, and an infant daughter, Lisa. Dean was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings including the Bishopric and as an ordinance worker in the temple.
Following the passing of Dean's first wife, he married Naomia Peacock on April 13, 1985. Naomia was a joy and a strength to him throughout the remainder of his life.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers, his wife Verla, and his two sons and infant daughter.
Dean is survived by his loving wife Naomia; his brother Gary Arnold; two daughters-in-law, Dennay Burrie and Leona Kaiser; Naomia's two children; 15 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday April 28th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Sugar City 4 th Ward building (grey building). The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home and again from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
