Obituary

Val Dean Dalling Jr., 72, of Rexburg, Idaho, passed away surrounded by his cherished wife, children and grandchildren on November 12, 2025 following a difficult fight with a sudden illness. He was born May 8, 1953, in Rexburg to Val Dean Dalling Sr. and Nelda Clairissa Luke.

Dean grew up in Rexburg, where he developed the deep sense of loyalty, steadiness, and humor that would define him throughout his life. He was a star athlete and valedictorian for Madison High School Class of 1971 and went on to graduate summa cum laud at both Ricks College and Brigham Young University in Provo. After earning his law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School —where he served as law review editor—he embarked on a legal career in which he was highly respected for 42 years.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dean returned from a 2-year mission to Santiago, Chile in 1974 and continued serving faithfully in many callings during his lifetime, including as bishop and stake presidency counselor. He was currently serving a married couples mission, teaching the addiction recovery program. His service blessed countless lives, and he had a gift for lifting others quietly and consistently.

On May 3, 1975, Dean married the love of his life, Kathleen Larsen. They celebrated 50 years together in a dedicated marriage filled with kindness and laughter and built a strong and joyful family. Dean is survived by his wife Kathleen; his children Val Dean III (Brooke), David (Emily), Diana Bagley (Ryan), Steven, and Natalee Taylor (John); and by his 26 prized grandchildren, who brought him great happiness. He is also survived by his treasured siblings Sherry Jardine, Vickie Burningham (Steve), Debbie Murray (Dean), and Roger (Kerry).

Dean was a consistent man in every area of his life and especially his passion for golf. Whether playing with his friends or his kids, Dean could be found at the course every day but Sunday. When he wasn't golfing he also followed area high school athletics of all kinds. He was a dedicated fan of the Beatles and BYU sports. But more than anything, he adored spending time with his dearest wife and children and grandchildren, who were the center of his world.

A viewing will be held at Flamm Funeral Home on Sunday, November 16, at 5:30 PM. A second viewing will take place on Monday, November 17, at 9:45 AM at the Rexburg East Stake Center. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM.

Dean will be deeply missed for his humor, his quiet generosity, his unwavering faith, and the love he offered so freely. His influence will continue through his family and all who were blessed to know him.
