Dell Hansen
Dell Sylvin Hansen, 89, of Sugar City, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at his home of natural causes. He was born September 2, 1919, in Thornton, Idaho to Hans Martin and Emma Jensen Hansen. He attended schools in Independence and graduated from Madison High School. He attended Ricks College.
He served in the US Navy during World War II on the naval destroyer the USS Remey in the South Pacific and the USS Gherardi in the North Atlantic. Following the war he trained as a heavy equipment mechanic and worked in Rexburg and Idaho Falls until his retirement.
He married Hazel Tubbs on June 26, 1946, in Holbrook, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on July 15, 1949. He loved to travel and he and Hazel enjoyed many trips to places around the country. They especially enjoyed attending his Navy reunions.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a skilled metal worker and loved spending hours in his shop.
He enjoyed visiting with everyone he met. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He could entertain his children and grandchildren for hours with his stories.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hazel of Sugar City; children, Harvey (Karen) Hansen of Malad, Delene (Doyle) Peterson of Highland, Utah, Carol (Tony) Rothwell of Salem, Shayne (Susan) Hansen of Newdale; a brother Rulon (Mary) Hansen of Decorah, Iowa; 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Blanche and Cleo Hansen; brothers Curtis, Leonard and Jewel Hansen; and two infant grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at the Sugar City LDS Stake Center, with Bishop John Hymas officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center. Burial will be in the Sugar City Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Madison County Veterans Team.
