Don J. Rasmussen, 77, passed away on September 6, 2013, in Ashton, Idaho. Don was born on April 25, 1936, to John and Sylvia Peterson Rasmussen in Coltman, Idaho. Don grew up in Mud Lake and attended school in Roberts, Idaho.
On October 21, 1955, Don married his eternal companion Thora Marlene French in the Idaho Falls Temple.
Don and Marlene settled in Rexburg, Idaho, where Don started his own masonry business which he owned and operated for over 45 years. He worked on many prestigious projects including the South Rexburg Stake Outdoor Activity Facilities and the Porter Park Carousel Restoration Project. Don also built the home where his family has lived for over 48 years.
Don taught his family to serve through his great example. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held many callings. He served as a bishop during the 1976 Teton Dam Flood Disaster and later served in the Rexburg Stake Presidency. Don and Marlene also served a service mission in Rexburg, Idaho.
Don will be missed and remembered by all those he served in his church callings throughout the community of Rexburg.
Don had many hobbies and always liked to stay busy. He enjoyed painting beautiful landscapes. He loved to garden and entered his produce in the county fairs.
With his green thumb, he won many blue ribbons and received awards of Grand Champion Gardener of Madison County. Don loved to tell stories of his childhood and life experiences. He spent several years writing his stories down and has left a legacy behind for his family. Don enjoyed activities where he could be with his family and took them waterskiing, snowmobiling, fishing, and anything else where he could be outdoors with his family.
Don is survived by his sweetheart, Marlene; eight children, Rocky DeVar (Anne) Rasmussen of Saint Anthony, Jolene Ray (Tom) Archibald of Rexburg, Tamara K. (Byron) McKauge of Rexburg, Trena Dawn (Craig) Harrison of Provo, Utah, Bryce J. (Natalie) Rasmussen of Idaho Falls, Kent Leon (Heather) Rasmussen of Richland, Washington, Shamae Lynn (John) Bowen of Rexburg, Rochelle (Jason) Russell of Litchfield Park, Arizona; 29 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and two sisters Bernice (Farrell) Stacey of Idaho Falls and Rose (Frank) Giles of Farmington, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary Jane Cook.
Funeral services will be held in Don's honor on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the Rexburg, Idaho, Center Stake building, at 590 Summerwood Drive, Rexburg, Idaho. A viewing will be held Monday, September 9, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Flamm Funeral Home, 61 North 1st East in Rexburg, Idaho, and Tuesday, September 10, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
