Obituary

Once again with his Lord and Savior and dear family members, Donald Lawrence Hammer (54) left his family and friends quietly on April 14, 2022, after a yearlong battle to regain his health. Donald was a very humble man who loved his God, his lovely wife Sherree whom he treated like a queen for almost 32 years, and his two sons Joshua Michael and Donald Jacob.

Donald Hammer was born on September 14, 1967, to Dennis Dean Hammer and Elaine Kay Sappington Hammer in Kellogg, Idaho. Donald loved where he grew up in the mountains of Northern Idaho. He loved to fish and hunt with his dad and Grandpa Sappington. After the closure of the Bunker Hill Mines in the early 1980's, Donald moved with his family to Mountain Home, Idaho at the beginning of his sophomore year of high school. He would always miss his North Idaho home and would say he was arriving home every time he visited.

At 15 his life changed again after attending a summer church youth camp. At one of the nightly services, God called him into the ministry and the path of his life changed forever. He would eventually obtain credentials with the Assemblies of God as a licensed and ordained minister.
Donald was an avid learner throughout his life attending Boise State University, Bethany Bible College, and Idaho State University eventually earning degrees in American Studies, Elementary Education, and a masters degree in Public Administration. Donald was a certified teacher and he adored teaching whether it was small children, teenagers, or adults.

In the summer of 1990, he moved to Eastern Idaho to help plant a new church in Blackfoot, Idaho. When he arrived, he met a lovely couple, Dale and Carol Wiklund, who introduced him to their daughter Sherree. It was love at first sight at least on Sherree's side and they were married on December 1, 1990. Their first son, Nathanael was born in August of 1993 but left them to be with the Lord at 4 months old. God blessed them again in 1996 with their son Joshua Michael and then Donald Jacob in 2001.

Donald and Sherree went on to plant a church in Rexburg in 1998 and they remained in Rexburg when it closed in 2003. Donald assisted many churches up and down the Eastern Idaho Valley throughout the years. He was always willing to help out any church he attended. He didn't need to be the man in charge but a wise man sharing his love of Jesus and all the insights he received from studying God's word.

Donald sacrificed what some would call a successful career to remain where God had led him to do a servant's work. Donald was preceded in death by his son, Nathanael Claude, his mother Elaine Kay Hammer, and his father Dennis Dean Hammer.
