Obituary

Doris Evelyn Carlstrom Shirley, 95, of Rexburg passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at her home. She was born May 15, 1921 in Archer, Idaho to John Bertil and Hilma Albertina Carlstrom.

Her parents were Swedish immigrants and she was very proud of her heritage, often commenting that she was a "Full Sweed". Her mother passed away when Doris was only 5 years old, so she and her younger sister Myra became very close and remained close throughout their lives.

She attended school in Archer and then Rexburg, graduating from Madison High School, Ricks College and BYU. She had a great loved for education all her life. She loved to read and be up to speed on current events. She loved to learn and loved to teach. She taught school for 29 years, including some time teaching in Europe before she was married.

She married James Frederick Shirley on June 24, 1954 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Together they raised 5 children; Lex, Gil, Nan, Jan and Tod. They enjoyed 62 years together. After retiring from teaching Doris and Jim spent many years together traveling the country participating in art shows and just enjoying being together.

She was very dedicated to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all for her life. She loved to teach and serve wherever she was needed. She loved the primary and young women and was positive influence to all that she taught. She loved to talk about her heritage how her Swedish grandparents were converted to the Gospel, and how she was so thankful for that. She had an amazing testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and never hesitated to share it with anyone, in or out of the church house. She bore her testimony many times to family members and others in her home, in her rocking chair, always with that great big smile and love in her eyes.

She is survived by her husband James Shirley of Rexburg, her sister Myra Peterson of Salt Lake city, sons Lex Shirley and Gil (Terri) Shirley of Rexburg, Tod (Dawn) Shirley of Sugar City, daughters Nan(Jason) Nielson and Jan (Bart) Stevens, both of Rexburg, 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 20th at the Rexburg 4th Ward Chapel with Bishop Rob Wood officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home and again from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.
