Dot Underwood

Dot Hinckley Underwood, 96, of Rexburg, died October 30, 2014, at her home of natural causes. She was born April 18, 1918, at Hibbard, Idaho to Ira Nathaniel and Emma Luella Keppner Hinckley, the 8th child and 3rd daughter in a family of 13. At that time they were living on a dry farm near Dubois. When two weeks old she had her first ride in a Model T Ford. The family lived in Hibbard but spent the summers on the dry farm west and north of Dubois. She helped in the house, the family garden and in the fields and helped milk the cows. She played the steel guitar and played for dances in the Teton Basin and elsewhere with a brother and a sister. Dot received her schooling in Hibbard and graduated valedictorian from the 8th grade.

In 1936, she met John Kenneth Underwood and they were married October 20,1937, in Dillon, Montana. He died May 17,1973. Together they herded sheep throughout the valley and in 1940 they moved to Ryegate, Montana and then to Powell, Wyoming in 1942 working with sheep and in the oil fields. She also worked in a seed house and in 1949 they moved to Billings, Montana working in the mobile home business. She then worked in a café as a waitress and in a fabric store. In 1977 She returned to Idaho to help with the care of her mother. In 1978 she went to work at Idaho Fresh Pak in Lewisville and retired in 1994.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Relief Society. She enjoyed a fishing trip, with family members, to Alaska and she loved to quilt and crochet. She is survived by a sister, Velma Gilchrist and many nieces and nephews.
