Douglas Levi Coles, 84, of Rexburg, died on March 19, 2015 at Homestead Assisted Living from natural causes. He was born March 10, 1931 in Rigby to Levi Henry and Myrle Prophet Coles.
He received his education in Rigby schools, graduating from Rigby High School in 1949.
He met his future wife, Darlene Monson, at a singles dance. His dance card was the first to fill up, every girl wanted to dance with Doug. Darlene was the lucky one to take all the spots on his dance card. They married on March 20, 1964 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They loved to dance together and he will be remembered for all the times he helped others learn to love dancing.
He worked for Farmers Equipment, a John Deere dealer, for 20 years, which he loved. He then worked for Heritage Homes for 5 years and then Madison School District for 15 years where he oversaw buildings, custodians and grounds. He took great pride in his work.
An active member of the LDS Church, he served in many positions, including bishopric, stake & regional dance director and numerous scouting positions. He will be remembered for his devoted service to scouting and the many boys he helped to achieve their eagle rank.
His passion was farming. He owned a dry farm in the Antelope area and an irrigated farm in the Rigby area. He loved all facets of farming and taught his children the value of work on the farm.
After retirement, he loved spending time in the yard. His garden was his pride and joy. He could grow the best carrots and willingly shared the fruits of his labors with neighbors, family and friends.
He was a member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and he and Darlene enjoyed going on many trips with this group.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene of 51 years; five children, Rosanne (Doug) Andersen, Debbie (Val) Lowder, Tammy (Eric) Gee, Kathy (Christian) Godfrey, Kevin (Melissa) Coles; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Elliott; brother, David and daughter, Pamela Shelton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 25 at 11 a.m. at the Harvest Hills LDS ward building, 612 S. Hidden Valley Road, with Bishop Doug Nielsen officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday, March 24 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Wednesday from 10-10:45 am. at the church. Burial will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
