Douglas J Oakey, 57, of Rexburg passed away after a brave battle with cancer on Monday, May 5, 2014.
Doug was born January 30, 1957 in Rexburg to Ray and Carol Oakey. He graduated from Madison High School and then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to Adelaide, Australia. Following his mission Doug attended Ricks College where he met his wife Julie McDonald. They were married April 24, 1980. After marrying, Doug and Julie moved to Logan Utah where Doug earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Utah State University. They returned to Rexburg and Doug spent the next 16 years working for the Idaho National Laboratory. More recently he worked as a project manager for Applied Engineering Services Inc. (Idaho Falls).
Doug loved the outdoors. He and Julie shared many miles hiking, backpacking, and skiing in Yellowstone and the Tetons. He was honest, hard-working, dedicated to his family, and loved to spend time playing with his grandchildren. He was a life-long faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and completely dedicated to his church service.
Doug is survived by his wife, Julie (Rexburg); his parents, Ray and Carol (Rexburg); his children, Taaffe Oakey (Draper, UT), Skye Beckley (Salisbury, MD), Lisette Oakey (Rexburg), Ryan Oakey (Rexburg); his siblings, Leslie Bedke (Seattle, WA), Clay Oakey (Seattle, WA), Steve Oakey (Rexburg), Doyle Oakey (Monument, CO); and four grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Park Street Chapel with Bishop Shane Wasden officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
