Dwight Reese Bowen, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on the morning of November 2, 2025, at the age of 82.
Dwight was born on July 11, 1943, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Grant Reese Bowen and Guinevere Lucy Jensen Bowen. As the youngest of eleven children, he was raised in Salem, Idaho, where he developed a deep appreciation for hard work, faith, and the simple beauty of rural life. He attended Sugar-Salem and Madison High Schools and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Salem Ward.
In May 1961, Dwight graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho, with high honors. That fall, he attended Ricks College on a scholastic scholarship. While there, he served as chairman of the Honor Council and president of the Circle K Service Club, a men's service organization. He graduated from Ricks College with high honors and a reputation for academic excellence and leadership.
Following college, Dwight served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, first in the South Brazilian Mission and later in the Northern California Mission, where he served as supervising elder, assistant to the mission president, and Second Counselor in the Mission Presidency.
Upon returning from his mission, Dwight received a full scholastic scholarship to Brigham Young University, where he was accepted into the Honors Program and majored in business. After earning his undergraduate degree, he pursued a legal education at the University of Idaho College of Law beginning in the fall of 1966. There, he was active in moot court, Bench and Bar, and legal services under the OEO Legal Services Program. He graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in June 1969.
He worked as a law clerk at Bowen and Cox Law Offices in Idaho Falls, Idaho, before completing the Idaho bar exam in early September 1969. In October 1969, he was admitted to practice before the Idaho Supreme Court. He practiced law in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Throughout his career, Dwight was respected for his keen intellect and consistent dedication to his work and to those he served.
On December 20, 1968, Dwight married Kayla Sue Ellsworth, daughter of Dr. Preston Blair Ellsworth and Juene Exolena Keck Ellsworth of Idaho Falls, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They made their home in Idaho Falls and were blessed with eight children: Dwight Jr., Jessica, Jennifer, Ashley, Jordan, Derek, Douglas, and Jeremy.
Dwight will be remembered not only for his keen intellect and sense of humor but also for his profound appreciation of beauty in both nature and the arts. Raised on a farm, he found great peace in working the soil and nurturing life from it. His yard was a reflection of his love for creation. He carefully tended flowerbeds and thriving gardens that brought color and joy to all who visited. Dwight created a home where everyone felt welcome and at ease, surrounded by beauty both natural and cultivated.
A collector of art and literature, Dwight valued knowledge and expression. His home was filled with books, artwork, and meaningful pieces that reflected his curiosity, discernment, and refined taste.
Dwight is survived by the mother of his children, Kayla Peters of Sun City, Arizona; their seven children: Jessica Williams (Matthew) of Delta, Utah; Jennifer Hammond (Bradley) of Peoria, Arizona; Ashley Lueck (Wade) of Gilbert, Arizona; Jordan Bowen of Peoria, Arizona; Derek Bowen of Surprise, Arizona; Douglas Bowen (Tara) of Peoria, Arizona; and Jeremy Bowen (Darcee) of Peoria, Arizona; as well as twenty-three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He is also survived by his siblings: Norma Pieper (Dee) of Salt Lake City, Utah; Doralee Rydalch (Don) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; John Bowen (Leslie) of Rexburg, Idaho; Suzanne Critchfield (Hilton) of Oakley, Idaho; and Kaye Parkinson (Howard) of Sandy, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dwight Bowen Jr.; his parents; and his siblings: Guinevere Taylor (Homer), Barbara Love (Bill), Grant Morrell Bowen (Norma), Lyle Bowen (Jacqueline), and Reed Bowen.
The viewing will be held Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at Flamm Funeral Home, 61 North 1st East, Rexburg, Idaho. Interment will follow at Sutton Cemetery in Archer, Idaho.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
