Joseph Dyal Roberts, 89 of Sugar City, died Monday, December 5, 2011 at the home of his daughter in Rexburg. He was born April 22,1922 at Sugar City to Horace Ensign and Martha Louise Jensen Roberts. He graduated from Sugar-Salem High School and spent his life in Sugar City except for the time he served in the military. He was a paratrooper, serving in the US Army during World War II, taking his basic training at Camp Roberts and Fort Ord, California. He served in New Guinea, the Philippines and with the occupational forces in Japan.
Dyal returned from the war in 1946 and on June 8, 1947 he married Mary Alyce Davies at Sugar City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. He worked for Challenge Creamery and hauled milk for twenty years from Chester to Burton and formed many friendships with the dairymen in the valley. In 1968 he went to work at Ricks College, for one year in the custodial department and then he was an equipment operator and drove bus. He drove the nursing students from the college to Idaho Falls and other places and he drove bus for the Showtime Company, transporting the students to many place throughout the US and Canada. He retired in 1987.
Dyal enjoyed fishing, square dancing, bowling, needlepoint and caring for his yard. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to sing in the church choir.
Survivors include his children; Rosemary (Milton) Ravsten of Rexburg and Scott (Georgann) Roberts of Ucon, a sister-in-law Athalia Spillman of Aberdeen, 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Alyce, his parents and sibling; Leatha, Lenn, Erastus, Elmer, Kenneth, Verla, Louie, Mary, Wanda, Mark and LaRue.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011at the Sugar City LDS stake center. The family will receive friends Friday, at the Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at the stake center from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
