Edward Eyring Hill, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2022, at his home in Rexburg, Idaho, surrounded by loving family members. He was born on June 5, 1928, in Logan, Utah, to Reuben Lorenzo Hill and Mary Theresa Snow, and was the seventh of eight children.
Ed grew up in Logan during the depression and learned the value of hard work from an early age. He had numerous jobs from the age of 13 to help supplement the family income. He met his eternal companion, LaDean Jones, while they were students studying sociology at Utah State University.
After graduation Ed enrolled at Columbia University and LaDean got a job in New York City. They dated and got engaged in Times Square at midnight on New Year's Eve! They married in the Logan, Utah Temple on August 1, 1951.
Education was important to Ed. He received a bachelor's degree from Utah State University, a master's degree from Columbia University, and a doctorate from Stanford University. He was a noted educator and served as a teacher and administrator in Santa Cruz, California (1951-1966). He then served as superintendent of two school districts. He headed the Franklin Pierce School District in Tacoma, Washington (1966-1981) and finished his career as superintendent of schools in the Madison School District in Rexburg, Idaho (1981-1991).
Ed was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of his life and served in many callings. He served as bishop in Santa Cruz, California early in life and also served a mission with LaDean in Little Rock, Arkansas after he retired. He particularly cherished serving in the baptistry of the Rexburg, Idaho Temple.
Ed enjoyed skiing and music. He started school ski programs in Washington and Idaho and taught hundreds of school children to ski. Ed delighted in playing the accordion and singing with gusto. He especially loved playing and singing Christmas carols with students in their classrooms. In their later years, Ed would sing several songs with LaDean every evening before bed. She passed away in 2014 after 62 years of marriage. At her bedside Ed sang, "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."
After his retirement Ed and LaDean traveled worldwide; however, their favorite trips were those they took with their grandchildren. Ed was friends with people from throughout the world and his favorite song was "It's a Small World After All".
Ed's greatest accomplishment is his posterity. He is survived by his children, Edward Jeffrey (Tamara Snell Mulford) Hill, of Orem, Utah; Scott Emery (Melody Loertscher) Hill, of Layton, Utah; Ted Howard (Lisa Garrison) Hill, of Mesa, Arizona; Anne Kathryn (John) Murry, of Astoria, Oregon; 55 grandchildren/spouses, and 71 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife LaDean, two daughters-in-law (K.C. and Juanita), one granddaughter (Heidi), and one grandson-in-law (Corey).
