Eileen Jones Powell passed away peacefully Sunday, June 25, 2017, surrounded by family members. She was born September 20, 1930, to Joseph Thomas and Verna Leone Randall Jones at Rexburg, Idaho. She lived her entire life in Rexburg and Burton, Idaho. Her parents both died while she was a young girl and she was then raised with her siblings under the loving guidance of her older sister Cleo and her husband, Gerald Johnson. She graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg.
On March 10, 1950 she married her high school sweetheart, Robert T. Powell, in the Idaho Falls Temple for time and all eternity. They enjoyed 67 wonderful years of marriage, full partners in raising a large posterity and blessing those they lived among. They have five sons and one daughter, Glade (Machelle) Powell, Wesley (Terrie) Powell, Kevin (LeAnn) Powell, Kerry (Grethe) Powell, Kirk (Ranae) Powell and Carolyn (Mark) Longhurst. Together, they have loved and enjoyed their children-in-law, 32 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren to date, and will be thrilled to know and count all of their eventual posterity. She is survived by her husband, Bob, her brothers Robert (Barbara) Jones and Clyde (Helen) Jones, brothers-in-law Arnold Powell, Don (Marie) Powell, Ted (Nedra) Powell. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Phyllis Jones, Mabel (Charles) Valentine, Alberta (Loren) Muir, Cleo (Gerald) Johnson, brother Joseph Thomas "JT" (Carol) Jones, a grandson Eric Longhurst, and a great-grandson Treagan Powell.
Eileen and Bob farmed throughout their lives and together cleaned-up and improved several old farmsteads while raising their children to love agriculture. She was a great supporter of 4-H and FFA in the community and attending ballgames as her family grew. She served for 20 years as the Rexburg Canal Company secretary, and was honored one year as the Farm Bureau Farm Woman of the Year. She loved her involvement with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was an interested reader of pioneer and local history.
Bob and Eileen traveled to a number of locations around the world. She always marveled at being able to do so from her humble beginnings in Rexburg. She loved to read and was a life-long learner. She enjoyed story-telling and portraying figures like Mrs. Santa Claus and Lucy Mack Smith. Precious memories were made at family gatherings and reunions such as those at Aspen Grove in Utah.
Eileen's heart's desire was always her family. Heavenly Father strengthened and preserved her in the most important callings of wife and mother. Her daily activities and life of hard work were always focused on her family and friends. Listening to, and feeding, every visiting grandchild was so important!
Eileen lived a life of faith in Jesus Christ and devotion to the Restored Gospel. She loved studying the gospel, teaching, and sharing her testimony. As faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout their lives, Bob and Eileen supported each other fully as they filled many church positions. Together they served as temple ordinance workers for 10 years in the Idaho Falls Temple and two missions to the Idaho Falls Temple Visitors' Center and the Idaho Falls Cannery. She served as a Primary President, stake Young Women president, Gospel Doctrine teacher and many other Relief Society, Primary and Sunday School positions. Members of her LDS ward often heard her share her testimony and will miss her influence and example. One of her salient personality traits was kindness. She is undoubtedly being received with joy by those who have gone before. Her family looks forward in faith to being with her again.
Viewing and opportunity to meet with her family will be held on Friday, June 30 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Burton West LDS Chapel, 3958 West 2000 South, Rexburg, Idaho. Funeral services to honor her life will be held at that same location at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 1. Viewing and visiting will be held from 10:00-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery.
