Obituary

Elinor Young Martin, age 95, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and aunt passed away peacefully on June 20, 2012.

Elinor was born in Salt Lake City on January 22, 1917, the daughter of Brigham Willard and Avera Pack Young, and the second of five children. She was surrounded by a loving family who laid the foundation for her sweet nature and nurturing personality. She had strong pioneer ancestry, and was a pioneer in her own right by living a faithful life of service.

Elinor met Dale Martin on a blind date and after their courtship they were married in Salt Lake City on June 29, 1934. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on March 12, 1964. Their first three children, Arlene, Jerry, and Sherrie, were born in Crescent, Utah. When Elinor was 27 years old, Dale went to work on a government project in Richland, Washington. There were several other Latter-Day Saint families in Richland and they formed a core of gospel strength that is still reflected in that area. While in Richland their last two children, David and Pam, were born. They moved to Kennewick, Washington in 1958 and then to Rexburg in 1980. After Dale's death in 1981, she moved to Salt Lake City in 1995 and returned to Rexburg in 2002.

Elinor was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many auxiliaries throughout her life. She served as Relief Society president twice and served in many callings in both the ward and stake Primary and Young Women programs. She was known for her beautiful handiwork and created gorgeous embroidery, quilting, crocheting, and sewing.

Elinor had a way of making everyone feel welcome in her home. She defined the art of gracious living. She was filled with compassion and charity and was always concerned with the comfort and welfare of those around her. Her family was the center of her life and she filled her life with service to them and blessed their lives with her homemaking skills. She loved being surrounded by her family and they loved being with her.

Elinor was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband, and her daughter, Arlene Klingler. She is survived by four children, Jerry (Lee) Martin of Richland, WA, Sherrie (Bob) Etherington of Sandy, UT, David Martin of Pleasant Grove, UT, Pam (Gary) Baird of Rexburg, 21 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 1:00 pm in the Rexburg East Stake Center located at 387 S. 4th East. Elinor's family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 pm Sunday June 24 at Flamm Funeral Home and from 12:00 – 12:45 pm on Monday at the Stake Center.
