Obituary

Emmeli Schaffner Sommer, our adored and beloved wife and mother, passed away very unexpectedly at the age of 81 on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, in Salt Lake City soon after attending an LDS mission reunion with her eternal companion.

Emmeli was born the sixth of seven children to Karl and Emma (Weisskopf) Schaffner on August 21, 1931, in the small hillside village of Fullinsdorf, Switzerland.

When Emmeli was nine years old, LDS missionaries taught and baptized Emmeli and several of her family members into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Emmeli remained true to her testimony of truth from the day of her baptism to her final breath.

In July 1951, at age 19, Emmeli immigrated to America — Rexburg, Idaho of all places. She worked for the Eldon Steiner family as a nanny and developed her English skills around their children. She has ever retained her stunning Swiss Accent.

Emmeli first met Jack Sommer of Rexburg just prior to her immigration to America. Upon Jack's return from his Swiss mission in late 1951, Jack and Emmeli were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Jan. 2, 1952.

Emmeli's love of life was her family and service to all. Her untiring care and love unbounded for her husband, children and grandchildren, her delivery of many loaves of bread and meals to friends, neighbors, and those in need, and her innumerable kind acts and love unending will be sorely missed. Her commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been whole and complete. She has served multiple missions with her husband Jack, has served in church callings, and in LDS Temple service.

She is survived by her husband Jack Sommer of Hibbard, children, Jack N. (Annette) of Salt Lake City, Thane (Carolyn) of Grover, Wyo., Shawn (Shirleen) of Salt Lake City, Michel (Ryan) Walker of Billings, Mont., Raymond (the late Mindy) of Hibbard, and Jared (Katie) of Hibbard, 29 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two brothers and a sister in Switzerland, and a sister Liselotte Janson of Rexburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, and Raymond's wife Mindy.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the LDS Henry's Fork Stake center located at 1508 South 3000 North in Rexburg. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and also from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services on Friday, at the stake center. Interment will be in the Rexburg.
