Fern Beattie Smith, 88 of Rexburg, passed away May 21, 2012 at The Gables of Shelley, ID under the compassionate care of Hands of Hope Hospice.
Fern was born December 7, 1923 to Myrtle Jensen and Frank Holland Beattie at the family home in Burton, Idaho.
Fern attended the Burton Elementary School and graduated from Madison High School. She also earned her Associates Degree in Arts and Sciences in 1975 from Ricks College.
The summer after high school, Fern worked as a waitress and maid for the Elk Creek Ranch in Island Park. It was there that she met the love of her Life, Jack Warren Smith Sr. They were married on October 20, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they raised 6 children and were blessed with the addition of sons and daughters in law as well as 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Jack and Fern were married 48 years when Jack passed away January 12, 1990.
As a young married woman, Fern worked at First Security Bank and Beehive Clothing. She spent her entire life with her husband Jack working on the farm raising crops and cattle. After her children were in school, Fern went to work as a secretary for the Rexburg Medical Center where she made many cherished life long friends during her 15 years there. After retiring from the Medical Center, Fern went back to school and earned her Travel Agent License and worked for Morris Magic Carpet Travel in Rexburg, ID.
Fern was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother. Family, gardening, travel, education, literature and the humanities were her passions. Fern was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints filling many positions throughout her life.
Fern is survived by her youngest brother, Stephen J. (Delores Ann Schafer) Beattie and Sister-in-Law Rosemary (Frank Russell) Zufelt-Beattie, her children, Ruth Ann (Richard) Hills, Jack Warren Smith Jr. (Barbara Ann Thompson), Caryn Gail Smith, N.J. "Jennie" Morgan, Mark Dwain Smith and Gina (Allen) Roberts, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her Parents, Frank Holland Beattie and Myrtle Jensen Beattie, an older brother – Frank Russell Beattie, her sister Margaret "Jean" (Harold) Beattie Bean, and her Husband of 48 years Jack Warren Smith Sr.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday May 25th, 2012 at the Burton LDS Chapel in Burton, ID, 3958 W 2000 S, with Bishop Shawn Gee of the Burton 4th Ward officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to www.flammfh.com.
