Fumi Miyata Hanami
Fumi was born October 8, 1915 in Imperial Valley, CA. She passed away quietly on February 24, 2012 in Rexburg, ID. When she was a young woman, she and her family were sent to a relocation camp in Poston, AZ where they were interred until the end of WWII. At that time she was given a one-way ticket to anywhere except California. She went to Chicago, IL where she worked for 9 months saving money to return to her home in California.
When she returned, she attended Fashion Design and Sewing School, where she became an accomplished seamstress and took joy in sewing beautiful outfits for her family, especially her mother and nieces. Her talent for sewing was exceptional.
In 1960 she married Yoshimi (Yes) Hanami and she moved to Rexburg, ID. As she settled into life on the farm, her yard became her passion, an oasis where she spent many hours. Although tiny and petite, she was a hard worker. In fact, she continued to mow her lawn well into her 80's. She and Yes were constant companions who took joy in their home and family.
Fumi dearly loved her family. When they were young, Fumi would always look after her younger brothers, Johnny and Tommy, and as an adult, she was always the one to get the entire family together to celebrate birthdays and holidays. As her parents got older, she and Yes made the 17 hour drive from Idaho to California on a monthly basis to care for them.
Her family and friends will miss her kindness, warm smile, and quiet strength.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otokichi and Mitsu, brothers, Ichizo, Masakichi, and Nobuo, sister-in-law Marvel, a dear nephew, Kenny Miyata and her husband, Yes.
Fumi is survived by brothers, Shinji Henry, John (Lily), Tommy (Mieko), sister-in-law Yuriko Miyata and many neices and nephews, all of whom loved her.
A special thanks to the many professionals and loving neighbors who cared for Fumi during these last years.
A viewing will be held Saturday, March 3rd from 10:00 am 11:00 am at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, ID. A graveside service will be held immediately following at the Rexburg Cemetery.
