Garth Ray Oakey, 70, passed away peacefully at his home on June 13, 2026. Born on January 12, 1956, and raised in Archer, Idaho, Garth lived a life defined by service, kindness, adventure, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Garth was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Joann Oakey, and his children: Dustin and (Chaila) Oakey; Aimee and (Dave Vanderbeek); Brantley and (Lacie) Oakey; Makay and (Alli) Oakey; Sundi and (Tito Paredes); Colter and (Ashley) Oakey; Mckinley and (Derek Sommer); Dawson and (Caralee) Oakey; and Kayson Oakey and (Elizabeth Arreguin). He also leaves behind 28 cherished grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and JoAnn Oakey, and his brother, Kim Oakey.
Garth spent 30 years working as a business manager before beginning a second career alongside his wife as a special education teacher. For the next 20 years, he dedicated himself to helping students succeed and reach their potential. Whether in business, education, athletics, or family life, Garth approached every responsibility with enthusiasm, patience, and a sincere desire to serve others.
Service was one of Garth’s defining attributes. He sought every opportunity to strengthen his community, whether through his church, serving on the city council, or helping establish youth sports programs. Throughout his adult life, he coached football, basketball, and soccer, positively influencing countless young athletes. He also served faithfully in the Boy Scouts, mentoring generations of youth through his example of leadership, integrity, and selfless service.
A true adventurer, Garth loved hiking, kayaking, biking, camping, and exploring the outdoors. He was perpetually curious and a lifelong learner, always reading and studying to gain knowledge and skills. Yet his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He delighted in bringing people together, sharing stories, playing music on his guitar, telling jokes, and entertaining grandchildren. He was often seen playing chess with grandkids, letting granddaughters paint his toenails, playing monster/bear, and taking kids shopping for prizes.
Those who knew Garth will remember his easy-going nature, his zest for life, and his remarkable ability to make everyone feel important. He was the person people sought out for advice, help, or simply a comforting hug. He seemed able to solve any problem, fix anything that was broken, and find a way to help whenever it was needed. More than anything, Garth took immense pride in his family, students, scouts, athletes, and friends. He showed up consistently, offering encouragement, support, wisdom, and love.
His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his generosity, mentorship, and example. He leaves behind a family strengthened by his love and a community made better because he was part of it.
