Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Martha "Gaylene" Blair on April 18, 2024, at age 81. Gaylene was born on September 30, 1942, to Calvin Harmon Smith and Martha Belle Edginton Smith, where she joined her two sisters, Clella
and Marlene (Molly). She grew up in Ashton.

In her early adult life she worked two jobs to support her young family. She was a waitress at the Silver Horseshoe and Me n' Stan's in St. Anthony. She later worked at the Juvenile Corrections Center where she became Unit Manager of Yellowstone Cottage. Shortly after leaving the JCC she became a business manager when she purchased the Star Bar in St. Anthony. She owned and operated the Star for many years with great success. "Come as a stranger, leave as a friend" was Gaylene's mantra, and she made many lifelong friends. Her take as proprietor was: "it is the people's bar." She held their interests with her wonderful sense of flair, the poems she wrote and posted on the marquee, and her many shenanigans.

Gaylene never forgot a birthday. Her calendars are full of her patrons and her families birthdays and she celebrated each and every one. She gave her all in everything she did.

Gaylene loved animals. Her fur babies were especially doted on (even in their afterlife) and they were very lucky animals. It brought her much joy taking care of them, walking them, and loving them. They loved her very much and will also miss her dearly.

Gaylene was very artistic. Drawing, painting, caligraphy, sewing, cooking, and crafting were just a few of her many talents. Many people are able to enjoy her works hanging on their walls, placed around their homes, or as a memento they have tucked away. Many have also enjoyed her kitchen creations. She did always give it all.

Gaylene is survived by her children Shayn (Lee Ann) Blair, Shayl Blair, Bill (Barbara) Blair, and Doranna (Billy) Brower. Thirteen grandchildren, Thirty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. And we can't forget Jance and Calli Jo, her two dogs.

Gaylene was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.

A Memorial Service for Gaylene will be held at Bert Flamm Mortuary on Monday, April 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.. Her family will receive friends that morning from 10:00 until 10:45 prior to the service.
