IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gina
Munns
January 11, 1979 – February 10, 2023
Gina Marie Munns, 44, gained her crown of glory on February 10, 2023, in Idaho Falls, ID, surrounded by her loving family. Her body just couldn't fight any longer on this earth. She put up a good fight for many years, and won each battle faithfully, But it was time to go home and join the loved ones waiting for her with open arms. Her body finally released from the bondage she had for 44 years.
Gina Marie Munns was born on January 11th, 1979 to Vaughn and Rhonda Munns. She was the oldest of four children. To know Gina was to know love. She taught those around her including her parents how to love unconditionally and to always stay humble no matter your circumstances.
Gina was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints, and had such a strong Testimony of her savior Jesus Christ and firmly believed like the woman that was afflicted with illness, that if she could only touch his robes she would be healed.
Gina was born with an advanced form of Spastic Cerebral Palsy, a debilitating disorder that affected her ability to move her muscles. While up to 60% of children born with this disease are able to walk independently, Gina's muscle movement was hindered to an extent that she couldn't stand, sit up on her own, bend her legs or her right elbow, or open her right hand. However, with years of therapy and training, she was able to move her left hand and she made the most of it.
The use of her left hand gave her the ability to control a wheelchair that gave her the mobility she needed to control the joystick on her wheelchair and allowed her to access any room in the house so long as the door was open. On one occasion, the ability to use just one hand gave her the opportunity to be a true hero.
On a hot summer day in 1988, Gina was in the garage of her home in Hamer, ID with her brothers Chance and Deven (ages 4 and 3) Unable to get in herself, she asked if her brothers would get her a treat from the freezer. Happy to help, and hoping to get a treat for themselves, both brothers climbed into the horizontal freezer to look for something to help their sister cool off.
Sadly, the two young boys had no idea that by allowing the door to shut, the clasp on the outside would latch and they would be stuck. Wearing just tank tops and shorts and locked in a mostly full freezer, these two boys likely had less than an hour to live. It didn't take long for Gina to come to the rescue. Her hand wouldn't allow her to open the door, but it did give her the power to go inside the home and get the attention of her mother Rhonda. After a few tries, she was able to convince her mother to come to the garage. Thinking her daughter just needed a snack, Rhonda was shocked when she saw her two youngest sons blue from the cold and the lack of oxygen, huddling next to one another in a desperate attempt to stay warm.
Gina attended schools at Hamer elementary, Midway elementary, Terreton middle school, and South Fremont High School. She graduated from South Fremont High School in the Special Needs Life Skills Class in 2000.
John and Gina's relationship started in this class. John was not without competition in the race for Gina's heart, but he had the determination and he won. Both Gina and John's rooms are decorated with years worth of movie tickets, cards from every occasion, custom annual calendars, and more stuffed animals than could be counted. John bought her one for every occasion until Rhonda had to step in and say, "There is no more room." So they switched to matching shirts. The last being their valentine's shirts where they were able to exchange on Monday at Champ's Heart and share their last kiss. John loves Gina so much that there would be days he would come home and be upset and his parents learned quickly that the days he was upset were days that were bad for Gina. Because marriage was not an option, on July 25th, 2020, Gina and John exchanged rings in a promise ceremony. The most treasured gift they shared was their love for one another that will last for eternity.
Gina was fast. So fast. Because of this she enjoyed participating in Special Olympics in the Slalom, obstacle, and bowling where she received many ribbons and medals with her license plate that said 2fast4U. Gina also enjoyed going to Developmental Workshop and Journeys where she worked on many life skills.
On Christmas 2019 in Sunriver, OR the Munns got together for shenanigans as always and decided to go on a hike on a nearby biking trail that was paved and wheelchair friendly. Before leaving Gina's brothers were teasing her as per norm, and joking whether she would be able to keep up with the boys and if they would beat her to the waterfall. The boys forgot about the joking, but Gina had the memory of an elephant and did not. The minute the van lift hit pavement, she gunned it down the trail in her wheelchair with her devious laughter taunting Derik as he sprinted from behind trying to catch up. Gina was fast, clever, witty, and
incredibly
competitive.
Gina was the most determined, adamant, and stubborn person ever. A few years back Rhonda got the great idea to paint Gina's room so her bed was moved into her and Vaughn's room. Where her bed was situated there was a light switch above her head and on her right side. As Erika was putting her to bed she was especially stubborn to stay up that night, and refused to let the light turn off. Erika tucked her in and turned off the light and went out to talk with Rhonda after Gina said she was going to turn the light on. About 30 minutes later Gina started yelling from the other room, "Yes, yes, yes." When Rhonda and Erika went in to see what was going on, Gina had wriggled herself to the right side of her bed, completely toppled over, extended her left arm as far as she could and turned on that darn light.
Gina is survived by her parents Rexburg, ID, her three brothers, Derik (Carla) Salem, OR, Chance (Beth) Twin Falls, ID, and Deven (Jennifer) Rigby, ID, and 10 nieces and nephews Isaac, Bailey, Porter, Jonah, Ian, Gavin, Collins, Aspen, Bennet, and London. She is also survived by her boyfriend and promised life partner John Quayle (St. Anthony, ID), and her best friend Erika Butler (Sugar City, ID).
She is preceded in death by Her grandparents Glen Jensen and Venice Browning, Ray and Nola Munns, step grandpa, Leonard Browning Uncles, LaMarr Browning and Kerry Munns, cousins, Cody Jensen, Lexie Munns, Josie Wood and Jake Wood.
Love is not a powerful enough word to describe the feelings her family and friends have for her.
The Munns would like to thank all care workers, DDA services, church leaders, friends, doctors, and all those that saw past her limitations and treated her as an equal.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be given to Champ's Heart, Shiner's Hospital, or Special Olympics Idaho.
