IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Glen
Smith
November 6, 1947 – November 18, 2024
Glen Smith, 77, peacefully passed away on the morning of Monday, November 18, 2024, at the Homestead Assisted Living Facility in Rexburg, Idaho. He was born on November 6, 1947, in Spokane, Washington, to Melden and Ella (Anderson) Smith, and was the oldest of seven children. Glen spent his early years in Spokane before moving with his family at the age of 12 to Joliet, Illinois, for his father's work. It was here that he gained his independence, riding his red Allstate motorcycle to school. As a young boy, he enjoyed swimming, cycling, and was an active participant in the ROTC program. With his bright red, Elvis Presley-style curly hair, Glen often faced teasing from classmates, but he found confidence through boxing lessons, which helped him stand up to bullies and build his physical strength.
At 15, Glen's family moved again, this time to Las Vegas, Nevada, for his father's job. It was during this time that he got his first car, a 1959 tan Ford Galaxie, to help him get to school and work. Glen graduated from Western High School in Las Vegas in 1965.
He later attended Brigham Young University (BYU), where he initially studied sociology but switched to accounting after taking an accounting class. Living in a basement apartment, his father generously sent him $50 a month for rent and another $30 for food and tuition. His dad was determined that his children would have the opportunity to attend college. At BYU, Glen developed a passion for skiing and began teaching ski lessons at Sundance Ski Resort.
In 1967, Glen served a 2.5-year mission in Belgium and France for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He learned the French language exceptionally well. He went on to use the French language throughout his career with great success.
Glen graduated from BYU with a degree in accounting in 1971. He went on to have a successful 30-year career with the CIA as a contract auditor, and later earned an MBA from Pepperdine University. During this time, he married and had a son, Ryan Thomas. After a divorce, he remarried Alisa Gail Isakson on December 27, 1980, in the St. George, Utah LDS temple. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising nine daughters and five sons.
Glen's love for his family was unwavering, and his faith was a cornerstone of his life. He served in many capacities in the LDS Church, with his most cherished role being that of teaching primary children. He was dedicated to staying fit, swimming every morning at the YMCA before work. Glen had a unique sense of style, often donning plaid flannel shirts, shoes a size too big, and anything warm and comfortable. He had a love for the scout program, serving as a scoutmaster, and loved spending time with his family, enjoying Hallmark movies, action films, silly dancing, and making up jingles. He was always there to encourage and praise his children for their achievements.
Glen leaves behind his wife, Gail, and children, Ryan (Marcie) Thomas, Heather (Kenny) Snodgrass, Brittany (Aaron) Bagley, Kristi (Nick) McCain, Cory (Heidi) Smith, Hide Isakson, Dane (Maria) Smith, Amy (Matt) Tanner, William (McKenna) Smith, Devin (Nikki) Smith, Nikki (Larry) Gunter, Cameron Smith, Sadie (Leland) Galten. Two sisters, Sharon (Dave) Kiger, Kathleen (Tony) Shipley and three brothers, Keith (Jan) Smith, Eugene (Frankie) Smith, Donal (Joyce) Smith and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Lorey Smith and Randi Smith, and his parents, Melden and Ella Smith, and a brother, Dale Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at the Old Burton Church, 3958 W 2000 S, Rexburg, ID 83440. A viewing will take place prior to the service at 10:00 A.M.
