Obituary

Gordon Boyce Peterson, 69 of Rexburg, Idaho, passed away October 26, 2010 at Madison Memorial Hospital from a heart attack. He was born January 23,1941 in Logan, Cache Valley, Utah to Woodrow and Dorothy Gordon Peterson. He grew up and attended school in Logan, including Utah state University. He played football and was active in the ROTC program during his high school years. He married the love of his life, Marilyn Miller, on June 22,1961 in the Logan LDS temple. They lived in Logan for the first few years of their marriage. Gordon was working for Utah Power and Light Company and was transferred to Grantsville, Utah and then to Rexburg, Idaho in 1969. He retired in 1995. They raised six children, five sons and a daughter. The have 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. As a young man, Gordon rode for the Cattleman's Association. He is an accomplished horseman, the owner and trainer of several fine Quarter horse and Appaloosa stallions.

He was a farrier for over forty years, doing custom and corrective shoeing. He learned and practiced many veterinary procedures. Gordon is a well known poet throughout Canada and the Western Untied States. He has appeared on radio and TV in Idaho , Wyoming, Montana and Canada. He is a life member of the Alberta Cowboy Poets Association and is the current secretary / treasurer of the cowboy poets of Idaho. He is also a recipient of the Silver Quill award and was inducted into the Cowboy Poets Hall of Fame in 2008. He was also awarded for his cowboy poetry in Fruitland, Idaho on October 15, 2010. He was a gifted cowboy poetry writer and has written several poems that have touched many people's lives.

Gordon loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and his grandchildren. His grandchildren were the highlight of his life. He lived for them and loved to spend time with them. He was a very talented man with many interests and hobbies. He loved guns and gun smithing, taxidermy work, flint napping, painting and making jewelry. He was making silver dollar belt buckles for his grandchildren at the time of his death. He lived each day to the fullest. That was his motto. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings including gospel doctrine teacher. He had such a love for teaching and a great knowledge of church doctrine and he expressed it well. He was a dedicated temple worker for the Idaho Falls and Rexburg temples for many years. He is known for his genuine love and concern for other and always did for others first. He was quick witted and loved to look for the humor in all that he could. He and Marilyn have enjoyed working for Avis Rent-a-Car shuttling cars and spending time together. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, and children; Danny (Vicki) Peterson of Rathdrum Idaho, David (Jeanna) Peterson of Idaho Falls, Travis (Melanie) Peterson of Duchesne, Utah, Lorin Peterson of Idaho Falls, Kevin (Amada) Peterson of Rexburg, Idaho and Cathy (Duane) Hatch of Rigby, Idaho, a sister; Linda (Paul) Olson of Logan, Utah. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Lyman LDS church (1952 West 6000 South) with Bishop Kevin Barnes officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Flamm Funeral Home (61 North 1st East) and Saturday at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
