Gwendolyn Phyllis Munroe Gannaway, 90, peacefully passed away Sunday, September 25, surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 23, 1921.
Gwen joins her loving husband of 66 years, RLee Gannaway.
Left to mourn their mother's passing are six children: Eilene Laymance of Kirkland, Washington; Kathryn Mahan (Glen) of Mt. Vernon, Washington; Beverly Douglas (Gary Struthers) of Oak Harbor, Washington; Charlotte Mills (Dave) of Port Angeles, Washington; Sherryl Cowley (Matt) of Murray, Utah; and Joe Gannaway (Trish) of Rexburg, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and spouses; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Gwen grew up an only child and moved frequently until graduating from high school at which time she joined a life insurance firm in Philadelphia. Her decision to pursue a career in hotel management led to her work managing a country club in New Jersey and then in Miami Beach at the end of WWII. Troops returning from the war were sent for rest and recuperation at the country club she managed. It was here that she met her future husband, RLee Gannaway, a cowboy/horse trainer from Texas, and a recipient of the Silver Star, a military medal for bravery and courage. They settled into ranching in central Texas where she learned to ride on a paint horse named Barney and became friends with a Brahma bull named Pinky. Quite a life for a city girl from the East!
In her late 40's, Gwen rejoined the workforce as a secretary for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, first in Shiprock, New Mexico, and then in Everett, Washington, from which she retired in her early 70's to care for RLee. Following RLee's death in 1996, Gwen spent the final 14+ years of her life living with her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Trish, and their four boys in Rexburg, Idaho.
Gwen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over 40 years.
Her favorite pastimes were making people laugh, watching her husband train horses, and helping her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren succeed.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, and on Monday, October 3, from 10:00 to 10:45 at the Hibbard Church. Services will be held on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 11:00 at the Hibbard Church. Interment will be at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lynnwood, Washington.
We'll miss you, Granny.
