IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Howard
Whitney
February 2, 1943 – May 22, 2023
Howard Gorham Whitney passed away in his home on May 22, 2023, at the age of 80. Howard was born on February 2, 1943, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Leonard and Frances Whitney. When he was 13 years old his family moved to Anaheim, California. Shortly after moving, missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints knocked on their door, and the family was baptized shortly after. When he was 19 years old, he attended a regional fireside in Southern California where over a thousand youth were attending. A recent convert named Dianne Hill, who was 16, was one of the speakers. He looked up on stage and saw her and leaned over to his sister and said, "see that girl, I am going to marry her." And of course, she laughed at him. It took him two years to convince Dianne. They were married on March 20, 1964, in the Los Angeles Temple for time and all eternity. They were adventurous and loved to travel and never let anything stop them. They lived in several different places including La Habra and Brea, California; Troy, Ohio; Broomfield, Colorado; Fruit Heights, Utah, and spent the last 17 years in Rexburg, Idaho. They made life-long friends wherever they lived. They were blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters.
Howard graduated from the University of California at Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He worked several different jobs to support his family until he found his niche working for Glaxo, Inc. as a pharmaceutical sales rep., where he worked for over twenty years.
Howard served in several positions within his church, both as a leader and a teacher. He and his beautiful wife loved serving the youth and he loved doing missionary work and helping the missionaries teach. Howard served a mission in Quezon City, Philippines with his best friend, Dianne. They loved working with the people and the missionaries they served with. His favorite calling was teaching his primary class for the last 9 years with his wife. He loved the kids and loved attending their baptisms.
To know Howard was to love him. He had an infectious smile and always made you feel loved and special. He instantly made friends and always made people feel welcome. He was kind, gentle, giving, loving, accepting of all, and compassionate. He was always there if you needed him. He leaves behind an incredible legacy of love, friendship, and honor. He was a perfect example of how to love and treat people. His hugs will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, his grandson Dillon, and his daughter Audra. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne of Rexburg, Idaho, Sons Destry of San Diego, California, Shon (Shelly) Whitney of Provo, Utah, and daughter, Tammy (David) Collins of Sugar City, Idaho.
