Obituary

"J.D." James DeRoy Hawks passed away peacefully at home February 25, 2017. He was born December 23, 1942 in Ogden, Utah to Joshua DeRoy Hawks and Hazel Morris Hawks. He was the oldest of two children, a sister, Julee was born 12 years later.

He lived the majority of his growing up years in Portage, Utah with summers spent in Bingham, Utah with his maternal grandparents. He graduated from Bear River High School where he excelled in track, football, and basketball. He served an LDS mission to the Australia South mission and a year after returning home married his high school sweetheart Nan Oyler on August 6, 1965, in the Logan LDS Temple.

He attended Weber College on a basketball scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. Later in life he earned a Master's Degree in Counseling.

He and Nan moved from Utah to Rexburg, Idaho in 1970 where he started his thirty-five year career, teaching Seminary.

They were blessed with 6 children, 5 girls and 1 boy: Shandi (Mitch), Kurt (Paula), Trisha (Chris), Natalie (Misty), Brittney (Rod), and Melissa (Nate). They also have 25 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. JD and Nan loved raising their children in Burton.
The family spent time together hunting, snowmobiling, and playing and watching sports. JD thrived on traveling to ball games to watch his children and grandchildren participate.

He spent his life studying and teaching the gospel. JD served as a bishop and in several bishoprics and in scouting, but his favorite calling was teaching gospel doctrine. He loved sharing the gospel and he and Nan did so on three missions together.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his son Kurt.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 2nd at the Wilford LDS Chapel, 215 N 2400 E, St. Anthony. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and again from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Burton Cemetery.
