Obituary

John "Jack" Peterson Barnes, 87, of Rexburg, Idaho completed his life's work and passed to the other side of the veil on 20 March 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jack succumbed to the effects of age, a devastating 2015 car accident, and Multiple Myeloma. He was a courageous warrior who fought a great fight.

Jack was born 10 July 1929 to Angus William and Dorothy Hortense Peterson Barnes in Arco, Idaho. Jack was the seventh child and the fifth consecutive boy in a family of 12 children. He attended Arco schools and graduated from Arco High School in 1947.

Jack met his sweetheart, Jean Terry of Moore, Idaho, at a church dance and never had eyes for anyone else. Jack and Jean introduced Jean's brother Cecil to Jack's sister, Donna and the four of them began a unique relationship that lasted for the rest of their lives.

In 1951, Jack served his country in the Korean War. He spent time in Japan and Korea before being honorably released in January 1953. After writing every day while he was away, Jack married Jean and Cecil married Donna in a double wedding in the Idaho Falls LDS temple, 13 January 1953. They were married for 64 years.

The couple first lived in Arco then moved to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah. Jack then worked on a survey crew at the Atomic Energy Site near Arco until changing employers and moving to Rexburg in 1963. Eventually he went into business for himself in Land Surveying, making Rexburg their home where they raised 2 daughters and 4 sons.

Jack was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. In 1993 they served in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. At age seventy, he served as bishop of Rexburg Fifth Ward, this was a time he and Jean treasured. They were kind and generous and loved giving to people in need, often opening their home to extended family members. What a wonderful example of Christ-like service he leaves his posterity.

Jack loved the great outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Surveying allowed him to discover the great beauties and fishing holes of Idaho.

Jack is survived by his eternal sweetheart, Jean, and his children Laurie (Russel) Wilson of Idaho Falls; Connie (Paul) Nielsen of Laurel, Maryland; Dale (Jan) and Kevin (Ann) of Rexburg; Dann (BJ) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Kristopher Barnes of Rigby. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren with 6 more on the way; his sister, Donna Terry of Burley; his brothers Larry (Shannon) of Moore and Arthur Barnes of Washington.

The family wishes to thank the kind doctors and staff at of Teton Cancer Center and Rexburg Home Health and Hospice.
