Obituary

John Henry Freeman, 93, of Rexburg, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2011, at his home surrounded by loved ones.

He was born January 12, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois to Edward David and Nellie Mae Freeman.

He graduated from York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois and attended two years of college. He was enlisted in the United States Army as an officer and sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He served in World War II in Europe. He also taught school in the 40th Ordnance, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He joined 367 Ordnance in Fort Bliss Texas and was sent overseas for duty. He later earned the ranks of First Lieutenant, Artillery officer and Captain.

He returned to the states and served in the Army Reserves for ten years and was assigned to form the first guided missile BN.

He married Miriam Jacoby on Jun 18, 1948. They had three children together.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Zell Stevenson Grover Freeman, two daughters Patricia Lynn Burnely, Susan Eileen Dodge; sister-in-law Lois Freeman; nephews, William and Robert Freeman; stepson Fred Martell Grover and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Miriam Jacoby Freeman, son Stephen Wayne Freeman; stepson Gail Steve Grover; son-in-law Charles Steven, Jr. and a great-grandson Byron James Prater.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 8, at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral Home and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Rexburg Cemetery with Military Rites.
