John Alan "Taz" Henderson, 62 of Rexburg, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 21, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. John was born November 19, 1948 in Rexburg, Idaho to Noal "Red" and Verna Smith Henderson. He grew up in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School in 1967.
He served in the US Navy (Seabees Construction Division) for over thirty years, traveling to all parts of the world including Viet Nam, Japan, Thailand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Diego Garcia and more. His duties included implementing maintenance schedules for all utilities shops, resulting from decline of system failures. He reduced power outages to near zero and increased water production by three million gallons per month, while stationed in Diego Garcia. He loved being a career man and achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He guided 200 enlisted staff members and junior officers in maintaining high morale and productivity during base downsizing and closure operations, one of which was in San Diego where he returned as a civilian and finished the job. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. He retired from the military July 1998.
John was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
John is survived by four daughters, Valerie Kim (Gary) King of Pocatello, Idaho, Tazkoma Ruth (Jeff) Burgoyne of Lehigh Acres , Florida, Nikkona Verna Henderson of Coos Bay, Oregon, Kistin Louise Henderson of Rexburg, three granddaughters, Makayla Henderson, Kaitlin King and Carissa King, two grandsons, Casey King and Kelly Clay. John is also survived by brothers and sisters; Verna Muir of Rexburg, Sharon (Johnny) McCulloch of Shasta Lake, California, Joanne (Hyder) Gardner of Teton, Idaho, Stuart (Shirley) Henderson of Rexburg, Robert (Vicki) Henderson of Cedar Hills, Utah, Marian (Dick) Purcell of Idaho Falls, Joyce (Wylie) Browning of Idaho Falls and J'lene (Layle) Cherry of Ashton, Idaho.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Rita Vian.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Rexburg LDS North Stake Center (314 East 2nd North) with Bishop Jerry Virgin officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Thursday at the stake center from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
