Obituary

Joyce Furness Luke, 91, passed away on July 23, 2013 at her home in Sugar City, Idaho.

Joyce was born in Sugar City on April 9, 1922 to Tobias Furness and Lucy Ricks Furness. She attended school in Sugar City and graduated from Sugar-Salem High School, where she participated in orchestra, choir, pep band and pep club.

Joyce attended Ricks College and later graduated from Utah State University with her teaching degree. She taught school in Sugar City for 25 years, 22 of those years as a first grade teacher.

She married Floyd Luke in Hobbs, New Mexico, where Floyd was serving in the military, on May 30, 1944. The marriage was solemnized in the Logan temple three months later. Four children joined the family: Richard, Layne, Laurie, and Chad.

Following retirement, Floyd and Joyce served a mission in Long Beach, California working with the Cambodian branch. They served in the Idaho Falls temple for nine and a half years. Joyce served in many Church callings throughout her life, especially in the Young Women and Relief Society organizations.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers (Jay, Rex and Hal Furness), her husband, and her son Richard.

She is survived by Layne (Judy) Luke of Sugar City, Laurie (Jorge) Orduño of Sugar City, Chad Luke of Utah, Lola Ann Luke (Willis) Blaine (daughter-in-law) of Rexburg, Idaho, and Tom and Nina Liau of Texas, thirteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17th at the Sugar 2nd Ward (Gray church). The family will receive friends Friday August 16th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, Idaho, and again from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested that donations be made to the Church Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
