Judy Steiner, 77, of Rexburg, Idaho, passed away peacefully Monday, May 11, 2026, surrounded by family.
Judy was born September 4, 1948, in Rigby, Idaho, to Milan and Laura Casper. She was raised in Rigby and graduated from Rigby High School in 1967. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Brigham Young University and later a Master’s degree in Communication from Idaho State University.
On March 29, 1968, Judy married Keith Steiner in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service.
Judy is lovingly remembered by her children: Brian (Erica) Steiner of Smithfield, Utah; Joanna (Rick) Kreifeldt of South Jordan, Utah; Lynette Butterfield of Springville, Utah; Melanie (Alan) Gordon of Rexburg, Idaho; and Kelli (Brett) Lindsey of South Jordan, Utah. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who adored her. She leaves behind her siblings Kent (Suzy) Casper of Boulder, Colorado; Dianne Madsen of Rexburg, Idaho; and Lori (Jeff) Chapman of St. George, Utah. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, her sister, Carol, her son-in-law, Jay and her grandson, Braydon.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Judy served faithfully throughout her life. Her many callings included Stake Relief Society President, Young Women’s President, and numerous teaching assignments. She also served alongside her husband as a Cub Scout leader and later as an ordinance worker in the Rexburg Temple. In her later years, she was blessed with the opportunity to serve in the mission office for the Idaho Falls, Idaho mission.
Judy was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends. She especially treasured supporting her grandchildren in their many activities, as well as traveling the world, quilting, and tending to the flowers in her beautiful garden.
Her professional life was marked by a deep devotion to education. A gifted and inspiring teacher, Judy influenced countless students over the years. She taught in the English departments at Madison High School and Sugar-Salem High School before spending 19 cherished years as a Communication and English professor at BYU–Idaho. Her time in the classroom and the relationships she built with students and colleagues brought her immense fulfillment.
Judy had a lifelong love of reading and literature. She cultivated an extensive personal library and spent countless hours reading with her children and grandchildren. Her passion for books left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Above all, Judy’s greatest joy was found in the memories she created with her family and dear friends. Her life reflected her favorite sentiment: “The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories.”
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Huntsman Cancer Institute and to Judy’s many friends for their loving care and support throughout the years. In honor of Judy’s lifelong passion for literature and education, the family extends an invitation to bring a children’s book, new or used, to donate in lieu of flowers.
