Obituary

Kay Bernice Freeman Mehner, 65 of Suffolk, Virginia, passed away, after a short courageous battle with cancer, on Thursday, February 27, 2014 in Suffolk.

She was born November 12, 1948 in Rigby, Idaho to Don and Lois Freeman of Rexburg, Idaho. She was the third of five children. She attended schools in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School in 1967.

She married Warren Safford and together they had a son, Tate. They later divorced. She married the love of her life, Arthur Mehner of Germantown, Maryland and was married to him until the time of her death.

Kay worked for Galusha, Higgins and Galusha, CPA's of Idaho Falls until she moved to Maryland. She then worked for IBM, receiving many promotions along the way, then with a division buyout by Lockheed Martin, they relocated to Suffolk, Virginia. After many years of service and promotions she acquired the highest and prestigious job of top security for the Air Force and along the way she received three Cogswell Awards.

She loved to make survival bracelets, crochet Afghans and baby shawls for all members of her family and other hand work. She and Art were avid fans of the Admirals hockey team and were season ticket holders for many years.

She had a kind heart, always wanting to help people in need. She gave many hours of service to a homeless shelter in Maryland and served on the board of directors and later as acting director.

She is survived by her mother, Lois Freeman of Rexburg, her husband, Arthur Mehner of Suffolk, VA., her son Tate Safford and his two children, Sean and Thea Safford of Middleton, MD., Sisters; Carolyn Crotty of Pahrump, NV., Nancy (Garth) Meikle and brother, Robert (Teresa) Freeman both of Rexburg. She was also loved by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Don Freeman and a brother Wayne Freeman.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at the Flamm Funeral Home of Rexburg with Heidi Hawkins of the Presbyterian Church officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
