Kazuo "Kaz" Sakota, 88, of Rexburg, died July 4, 2009 at his home of natural causes. He was born November 6, 1920 in Rexburg, Idaho to Kisaburo and Kura Yukinaga Sakota.
He graduated from Madison High School and attended Japanese school until World War II broke out. He served in the Army during the war. In 1944, he received an Honorable Discharge of honest and faithful service from the United States Army.
He married Chiyemi Eleanor Sasai on May 5, 1945. In May of this year they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
He farmed with his father and brothers, Kiyoshi and John. The Sakota brothers leased or purchased ground from almost 20 farmers. In 1976, they lost everything in the Teton Dam flood. They bought new equipment and continued farming. In 1982 the partnership was dissolved. Kaz then farmed with his two sons, Darwin and Alan.
He was an active member of the JACL (Japanese American Citizens League). He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1964. He loved to play basketball, bowl, fish, and go to Vegas and Fort Hall. In 1985, he was the Madison County Farmer of the Year. In 1999, he was the Rexburg City League Bowler of the Year. He made artificial flowers out of plastic Coke holders, made beaded lamps and lighted Christmas balls. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Chiyemi Eleanor of Rexburg; children, Kathy (Richard) Laritz of Boise, Carolyn (late Richard) Smith, Darwin (Wendy) Sakota, Alan Sakota, Audrey (Lyle) Holden all of Rexburg; sisters-in-law, Mable Sakota and Marie Sakota both of Rexburg; brother-in-law, Masa Nishihara of Nyssa, Oregon; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Kiyoshi and John, sister Micheye Nishihara, son-in-law, Richard Smith, great-granddaughter Laityn Robson, great-grandson Brandon Lee Beverley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10 at the Sugar City 2nd Ward Chapel with Bishop Walter Dietz officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Rexburg Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Madison County Veterans Team.
