IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lanay
Grover
May 11, 1940 – February 19, 2025
LaNay Withers Grover died February 19, 2025. She was born in the spring of 1940 to Lawrence and Ardella Withers. She joined her older brother in their home in Sugar City, Idaho. The family added three more brothers, and they all moved to Hibbard, Idaho to a home with indoor plumbing and a room of her own. Hard work was a necessity living on a farm. There were always chores and tasks including working in her mom's giant garden. During the potato harvest it was all hands-on deck. She would glean potatoes at the end of the rows or be cooking for hungry harvesters late into the evening.
Despite her busy life at home, she enjoyed school and was an excellent student. She was active in many extracurricular activities and was involved in student government at Madison High School in Rexburg. She continued her studies at Rick's College and eventually earned her bachelor's degree from Utah State University. To earn money for college she worked summers in West Yellowstone. There she met Samuel Larry Grover who had just returned home from Korea after he finished his Army deployment. He knew she was way out of his league, but he actively pursued her, and she eventually agreed to marry him after she graduated. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1962.
They moved around the country the first few years of their marriage. First to Salt Lake City, for her student teaching and for Sam to receive electrical engineering training. Sam got a job, and over the next few years they lived in Massachusetts and California. LaNay worked at a bank and met lifelong friends in Massachusetts. In California, she worked at the RAND Corporation think tank as a secretary, where she was trusted with high-level security clearances.
They eventually moved to Salt Lake City and bought the house they would live in for the next 60 plus years. She welcomed two children and was fully invested in raising them. She was the best mom, best room mother, PTA president, Reflections Director, and personal tutor. She ensured that her kids always felt loved, seen, and valued as individuals. After her kids were raised, she went back to teaching high school English at a private school. There she inspired the love of reading and writing in another generation of students. After she retired, she spent time traveling and seeing the world. She and Sam loved a road trip and drove across the country multiple times. They also liked going on Cruises and particularly enjoyed Australia and the Panama Canal. Throughout her life, she used her extensive gifts in her community and held many leadership positions at church.
She was inspiring, innovative, and great organizer. Her lessons were always thoughtful and engaging.
She was very compassionate and witty. At all stages of her life and in all the places she lived, she was blessed with loving, interesting and loyal friends. Her life was full and well lived and her legacy of kindness and authenticity will live on. We are grateful to Kim, Fernanda and the staff at Spring Gardens for the compassionate care she received in the last years of her life.
She is survived by her brothers Ralph and Richard (Linda) Withers, son Jeffrey (Pam), daughter Jennifer, and four amazing grandchildren Andrew (Kelsie), Joshua and Avery.
She is preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Ardella Withers, brothers Arlen and Bryce Withers, sister-in-law Konra Withers and her husband Samuel Grover.
