Obituary

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Larry Leonard Smith, passed away with family by his side Friday, November 4, 2011 at his home, from complications of a stroke.

He was born in Burton, Idaho on January 15, 1932 to Thomas Leonard and Grace Marie Hertzig Smith the second of three children. He grew up and attended elementary school in Burton. He graduated from Madison High School where he was involved in track, choir and FFA. He served a mission for the LDS church in the West Central States Mission.

While attending Ricks College, Larry met Zada Higginson of Pingree, Idaho. Zada went off to Provo to attend BYU the next fall, and he soon realized that he wanted to marry her and quickly proposed. They were married March 24, 1961 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Larry received an Associates degree from Ricks College and also attended Utah State University for a time. They settled in Burton, Idaho west of Rexburg.

They lived and worked on their farm in Burton and also spent time working farms in Newdale and Monteview, Idaho. They raised cattle, wheat, barley, potatoes, hay and children. He worked hard and provided well for his family as he taught his children the importance of responsibility and a good days work. He served several years as Madison County Farm Bureau president and on the PCA board of directors. He worked for 25 years in the insurance business, and enjoyed the many people he was able to meet and associate with throughout his career.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and had held many ward and stake positions. Larry was a home teacher, Elder's Quorum president, Young Men's leader and bishopric member in the former Rexburg 7th and 17th wards. He also served in the presidency of the Stake Seventies and as a Stake High Councilor.

Larry is survived by his wife, Zada Higginson Smith of Burton; daughters Marlene (Thomas) Page, Centerville, UT, Marie (Marvin) Hansen, Arimo, ID, Annette (Roy) Nebeker, Golden, CO; sons Max & Camille (Mecham) Smith and Anson & Gretchen (Peterson) Smith; sister Faye (Lamar) Nef, Rupert, Idaho; sister-in-law LaRee Smith, Rexburg, Idaho; 22 grand children and 1 great grand daughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents T. Leonard and Grace Smith, and a brother Gene R. Smith.
