LaVar Powell

October 2, 1936 — March 30, 2026

Rexburg

Lavar G. Powell, 89, passed away on March 30, 2026, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Lavar was born on October 2, 1936, in Heman, Idaho, to James Raymond Powell and Agnes Pearl Terry. He was the tenth of thirteen children, a place in the family that shaped his strong work ethic, resilience, and deep appreciation for family. Having outlived his immediate family, we find comfort in imagining the joyful reunion he is surely having with them now.

He graduated in 1951 from Sugar-Salem High School and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy for four years.

Lavar married JoAnn Fentor, and together they had two sons, Michael Reed Powell and Douglas James Powell. They made their home in Billings, Montana, until later parting ways.

He eventually returned to Idaho, where he met and married the love of his life, Rebecca Perkes, on October 5, 1973. Lavar lovingly adopted Rebecca’s daughters, Donnel Kathryn and Desiree Shannon, and together they built a beautiful life and family, welcoming five more daughters: Melinda, Rachel, Ariann, Regina, and Camilla.

Lavar was a devoted husband, father, and provider. He worked hard throughout his life to care for his family and instilled in them the values of faith, dedication, and love. His testimony of the gospel was a guiding force in his life, and he and Rebecca were blessed to serve two missions together—one in Nauvoo and another at Rock Creek Girls Camp.

He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures: riding side-by-sides, tending to his garden, painting, and sharing stories—many of which will be treasured and retold for generations. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart. He loved them deeply, and they brought him immense pride and happiness.

In later years, Lavar and Rebecca enjoyed “chasing the sun,” spending time in Overton, Nevada, and Hurricane, Utah, where they formed lasting friendships and created cherished memories.

Lavar will be remembered for his steady presence, his deep love for his family, and the legacy of faith and hard work he leaves behind. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
