Layne Harris

Layne Harris died unexpectedly at his home on the morning of September 25, 2026. As a tender mercy, we found a message he sent in August to someone he reached out to after 50 years. In regular fashion, Layne is helping us get the job done and making things easier on us. We want to share it as his obituary. These are his own words about his life.

“I'm Layne Harris. I finished high school at Sugar Salem, served my mission to Brisbane Australia, I'm married, have 4 great married kids, with 15 grandkids, and just was blessed with my first great grandson, built homes in Sugar City area and in Southern California, Los Angeles area, moved back home worked as a computer programmer and the Preston school district IT director. Now I'm back in Idaho Falls and building for a brother who took over my Dad's construction company after he passed away. It's been quite the life. I feel very blessed when I look over what I have accomplished. I hope you get that same feeling. Well, I've talked your ear off. I hope all is well with you and your family.

Layne Harris was preceded in death by those he so loved and loved him: his parents, Harold and Ganene Harris; his little brother, Kip (Nola) Harris; and his in-laws, Laron and LaRane Kunz.

Layne will be deeply missed by those he so loved and loved him: his wife of 48 years, Melinda Kunz Harris, his son, Benjamin (Danielle) Harris; his daughter, Sydney (Anton) Nelson; his son, Cory (Katy) Harris; his daughter, Megan (Sterling) Heiner; grandchildren, Wyatt, Isie (Brixton), Gracie, Maddie, Emie, Aiden, Aubrey, Danger, Hudson, Bailey, Chaz, Grey, Violet, Dawson, Ivy; great-grandson, Badger; little brother, Bryan (Leti) Harris; and baby sister, Nicole “the cruddiest birthday present ever” (Greg) Malstrom.

We will honor his memory and life with a viewing at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 from 5:30-7 pm and a viewing Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 10 am at the gray church at 6 N Teton Ave in Sugar City, followed by a funeral at 11 am at the same location. He will be buried in the Sugar City Cemetery as a final resting place while he waits for the rest of us. We love you, Dad.
